As students head to and from school, please remember to pay attention and watch for our school crossing guard. She is out there every day (rain or shine) helping students and parents arrive and depart school safely.

🛑 Obey the crossing guard’s directions.
👀 Stay alert.
🐢 Slow down.
📵 Put the phone down.

Our children’s safety is everyone’s responsibility. Give our crossing guard—and our kids—the attention they deserve!

⚠️ ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE – DEPOT STREET

The water has drained and the road is now open. Thank you for your patience.

Police and fire crews are continuing to work to reopen the Depot Street underpass and overpass after heavy downpours caused significant flooding.

Officer Johnson was able to safely assist two stranded motorists after their vehicle became disabled in the flooded underpass. The Chapel Hill Fire Department then removed the vehicle from the water. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

At this time, both the Depot Street underpass and overpass remain closed until further notice. Please avoid the area, obey all road closure signs, and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle away.

We appreciate your patience and will provide updates as soon as the roadway is safe to reopen.

Update: power has quickly been restored.

The power outage at the south end of town is actively being addressed to locate the issue. At this time we don’t know the extent of time to restore service but we do know crews are working diligently to restore power.
