The Providence Baptist Church is open during the Chappell Hill Bluebonnet Festival in April, the Fourth of July parade, and the Scarecrow Festival in October. It is occasionally open on Saturdays around lunch during the Spring. If you would like to tour the Church, you can make arrangements with the Chappell Hill Historical Society. It is available for wedding rentals, and makes a lovely backdrop

to a country wedding. The Providence Baptist Church was originally organized by Reverend Hosea Garrett in the early 1840s. Prior to that, Baptists met with itinerant preachers or traveled to the nearest Baptist Church, which was in Independence, Texas. The first Providence Baptist Church building was erected in 1844 approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Chappell Hill between the Village of Jacksonville and Cedar Creek. Jacksonville was named after the Jackson family, and though eventually Jacksonville faded as Chappell Hill grew, the family continued to have prominence in the region. The Providence Baptist Church eventually moved to Chappell Hill after a violent windstorm destroyed the church in 1866. Part of the congregation continued to meet in the Presbyterian Church in Chappell Hill. This building is the church they built to replace their destroyed church, on the former site of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church on Main Street. The construction of the Providence Baptist Church finished in 1873. It is likely that the Church's location spurred the name change from Calaboose Street to Providence Street. After a period of decline beginning in the late 1960s, the Church was donated to the Chappell Hill Historical Society in 1996, and has since been restored in 2000. The Providence Baptist Church is included in the National Register's Historical District of Chappell Hill. Visitors can view an interior baptistry under the pulpit and separate dressing rooms for men and women. Also on display is the early charter of the church, including some of the enslaved workers on the local plantations. You may notice that the steeple of the church is crooked. This happened in the great storm of 1900, which completely destroyed the original building for the United Methodist Church. The HC Brandt house is next door to the Providence Baptist Church. After Brandt sold the house, it became the parsonage for the church.

This is a painting of the Providence Baptist Church by local artist Raymond Lipscomb. The Chappell Hill Historical Society Museum currently has several of Mr. Lipscomb's paintings on display. Come by during their open hours, Wednesday-Saturday from 10am-4pm to view them.

From it's earliest beginnings in 1842 in the nearby community of Jacksonville, Providence Baptist Church found a way to persevere through war, storms, disease, and demographic decline. Eminent names in Baptist History such as R.E.B. Baylor, Hosea Garrett, and William Tryon were associated with the establishment of Providence Church. For several years after the destruction of the Jacksonville church building in 1866 by a great storm, the Providence fellowship met in Chappell Hill in borrowed quarters. By July, 1873 a new place of worship had been erected in Chappell Hill debt free.

In 1893, the church purchased from Henry C. Brandt six additional lots adjoining the church property, including a residential structure. This would be used from time to time as a residence for the current pastor.

During the first part of the twentieth century, Providence Church struggled to maintain its membership, to retain a pastor, and to keep its property in repair. Records indicate that during the early 1970's, regular services had been discontinued. Nevertheless, efforts were continued by concerned parties to carry out needed repair work. In spite of all efforts, though, a period of slow decline in the physical structure set in and by the early 1990's the church took on a decided derelict appearance. Its future was in serious doubt.

In 1996, the last congregational members of the Providence Church deeded the property to the Chappell Hill Historical Society which immediately undertook a restoration program to rescue the historic structure. By the end of 1999, this work had been completed and, today, Providence Baptist Church again stands in dignity within the Historic District of Chappell Hill, Texas.
