“Hey everyone, welcome to Chardon / Geauga County, OH; Home of Maple Syrup production. We receive fire calls often this time of year for “smoke” coming from a structure like the one you see below. But alas, no cause for alarm... it’s an evaporator at a sugar shack, slowly boiling off the water from the sap to make pure Geauga County maple syrup. It’s called a “sugar house”. See you at the Geauga Maple Festival (www.maplefestival.com).

We Remember!

Chardon Fire Department personnel have recently fielded a few calls from concerned citizens about the East Palestine situation. The questions center around whether Chardon Fire is monitoring the situation and air quality in our area. The Chardon Fire Department and Geauga County Department of Emergency Services is actively monitoring the situation and have received no warnings or indicators related to poor air quality in our region. We will continue to monitor the situation, and notify the public, should the need arise. Please do not call 911 or non-emergency lines in reference to this situation.

Chardon Fire Department received a record number of calls (2,206) for service in 2022.

This number has steadily increased over the past 5 years, and has been a trend among EMS agencies and fire departments nationally. Experts attribute this national trend to the aging population, need for EMS help at residences for lift assists and non-emergencies, the COVID-19 pandemic, and an increase in mental illness responses.

We appreciate the continued support of our taxpayers in our response area, as we continue to provide EMS, fire suppression, and prevention services for our community. We value our auto-aid / mutual aid partners at Hambden, Munson, Burton, Concord, and Kirtland Fire Departments, who provide fire response to our major incidents. Our great relationship with Chardon Police Department and Geauga County Sheriff’s Office enhances our ability to safely serve our residents and protect our members. And finally, our collaboration with University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, UH TriPoint, UH AirMed, and medical direction through UHEMS Institute has allowed us to continue to provide award-winning EMS care to our patients.

To my Family, Friends, Public Officials and Members of the community.

After 24 years of serving proudly as the Fire Chief of the Chardon Fire Department, I will be stepping back from the position.

As many of you know, for the last two years, we at the Department have been working on a succession plan program to prepare Asst. Chief Justin Geiss to fill the role of Fire Chief. Chief Geiss will move into his new position this Thursday January 5th.

Chief Geiss is very capable, energetic, and willing to make the change. Under his leadership will come continued professionalism and new ideas in the ever changing Fire and Emergency Medical Services profession.

In January of 2022 I was promoted to the Asst. Chief’s position with the City of South Euclid Fire Department. This new position does not allow me to be at the CFD during the week and normal business hours. With the Department setting a new record of 2,206 emergency calls during 2022, the time has come for there to be a full time Fire Chief who can manage and be present on a daily basis.

On the 5th, I will move to the position of Assistant Chief with the Department. Along with Assistant Chief Tom Hummel and the Officers of the Department, we will assist Chief Geiss in continuing the professional management of the Department.

Over the years I have been honored to be surround by so many great people from the Department, Public Officials and the Community who have helped to make the job of Fire Chief very exciting and rewarding.

Together with all of the hard working men and women of the Chardon Fire Department who put their lives on the line every day for the betterment of others, we will continue to provide the best fire and rescue protection for the community possible. Through education, training, state of the art equipment, safety programs, and dedication and pride in the community, we will continue to make the communities that we service the safest places to live, work, and visit.

Thank you Larry L. Gaspar

Yesterday morning, at approximately 09:25am, the Chardon Fire Department and our auto-aid, from Munson and Hambden Fire Departments responded to a call for an apartment fire at Char Mill Apartments (127 Wilson Mills Rd.) in the City of Chardon. Upon arrival, fire personnel encountered heavy fire from Apartment #1. Two occupants and their dog were able to escape prior to arrival. They were taken to UH Geauga Hospital by Chardon Fire/Rescue for evaluation and treatment.

Upon arrival a 1st alarm MABAS Box Alarm (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) was immediately requested for manpower. Concord, Burton, and Kirtland Fire Departments responded on the Box. An aggressive interior attack quickly brought the fire under control. Fire crews overhauled the area and nearby apartments for potential fire extension, with no significant extension discovered. The Geauga Fire Investigation Unit was called to investigate the origin and cause of the fire.
Special Thanks to the Chardon Police Department.
