Lucas County Preservation Alliance/Hotel Charitone The Hotel Charitone, located in Chariton, Iowa, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. and the Vredenburg Foundation.

Lucas County Preservation Alliance was created in 2011 to cultivate a thriving cultural and economic climate in the City of Chariton and throughout Lucas County, Iowa, by rehabilitating, restoring, and preserving historic and unique buildings. Designed by noted Chariton architect William Perkins, the Charitone opened in 1923 as a hotel catering to railroad passengers. As the years passed, downtown

hotels like the Charitone fell out of favor, and the hotel passed through a succession of owners and eventually fell into disrepair. In 2012, a coalition of concerned citizens formed an organization to acquire the hotel and received a major fundraising boost from Hy-Vee, Inc. The Hotel Charitone has undergone a $5 million historic rehabilitation and now houses a restaurant on the main floor and apartments on the upper floors.

The alleyway wall began to collapse in 2018. LCPA stepped forward to save the oldest building on the historic Chariton square.

Today, the building is not only stabilized but restored with a mission to provide education, non-profit retailer, and upper-story housing. Restoration can be a ripple effect in the local economy.

All of LCPA’s work cannot be discussed without recognizing the partners that have made the vision into reality. However, we need our local community’s help to get to the finish line. Consider donating today!

Partners to date:
•Indian Hills Construction Academy
•Chariton Area Chamber Main Street
•City of Chariton
•Iowa Economic Development Authority
•Dekko Foundation
•Midwest Heritage Bank
•Vredenburg Foundation

While we have been quiet on social media, HUGE successes have been made on the Palmer Building. We are excited to share more with our community and officially launch the final phase of our fundraiser.

Not only is the Palmer Building a historic restoration project but also an investment in education and community pride. Partnering with the Construction Academy and Chariton Booster Club allows for a historic building to be revitalized and serve our community in more than one way.

Please share the good news and consider donating to our project.
