Ever wonder why an ambulance will load someone up and then just sit there for a while before leaving?

We’re usually not just sitting there.

The ambulance is basically our office. Once we get a patient in the back, pretty much everything we need is within arm’s reach. From a stethoscope and cardiac monitor all the way to an ultrasound.

A lot of times there’s still some assessing we need to do before we leave. We’re not only trying to figure out what’s going on, we’re also figuring out where the best place is to take you.

Not every hospital is the same. Some are better equipped for strokes, some are trauma centers, some specialize in certain heart problems, and what we find during our assessment can change where we need to go.

Sometimes we’re starting an IV, giving medications, drawing blood or getting other things done before we leave.

Could we do some of that while we’re driving? Absolutely.

Is it easier to do while we’re sitting still instead of bouncing down the road in the back of a box? Also absolutely 😂

So next time you see an ambulance sitting in front of a house for a few minutes after the patient is already inside, there’s a pretty good chance we’re not wasting time.

In the theme of transparency with our community, we will be sharing our run numbers each month, unfiltered straight from our actual log..

While the numbers might not look massive, remember that we are a fully volunteer department—we are your neighbors, and we step up to serve whenever and wherever we can! There are times when our members are at the station for over 24hrs and either no calls come out in our district or no calls come out at all. (This is a good thing, it does not mean we are not there)

--- Note on Standbys: Standbys are any event where we move to the location of the event and are available on site, either due to it being required for the event or at the request of the event staff. While donations are accepted, we do not require them to do these standbys and we do not receive them for most of the standbys. We are there to shorten response times, keep the community safe, and save the community money.

Our station operated as a cooling station today and will continue to do so tomorrow and Friday. If citizens need to stop in to cool off please do.

PUBLIC SAFETY REMINDER:

Tonight, personnel placed traffic cones and a road closure in an area affected by high water in order to help protect the public from hazardous roadway conditions. Unfortunately, a vehicle chose to drive through the closure, destroying two brand-new traffic cones that had recently been placed into service through a grant awarded to our department.

The driver then turned around and left the area after encountering deputies at the other side of the high water.

We understand mistakes happen, and we would appreciate the opportunity for the individual involved to come forward, speak with us, and assist with replacing the damaged equipment. As a volunteer organization, we work hard to make every piece of equipment and every grant dollar count for the safety of our community.

Road closures are put in place for a reason. If you encounter high water or barricades across a roadway, please do not attempt to drive through them.

Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

The combination of gusty southwest winds and low relative humidity will result in increasing potential for adverse fire behavior today. A Special Weather Statement for Increased Fire Danger is in effect for portions of the VA Piedmont and I-95 Corridor today. Reminder: In Virginia, a ban on open burning before 4 pm remains in place through April 30th. In North Carolina, there is a statewide burn ban in in effect for all open burning due to increased risk of wildfires.
