Truck 254 has been serving St. Charles township for over 30 years. Its primary use is for field and grass fires, and it does a great job of doing that, however, it was time for an upgrade. This past winter with the help of donations from Schueth Ace Hardware, O'Brien Plumbing and Heating/Cooling and firefighter Linford Martin, we had 4 spray nozzles installed under the front bumper. These upgrades will make fighting grass fires more efficient.

Tonight, the Osage Fire Department hosted a training from the Iowa Fire Training Bureau and PRI (Professional Rescue Inivations) on Incident Command and Fire Grounds Control. In the first training of its kind in our area, twenty-four firefighters from seven surrounding departments learned how to better lead and organize a multi-department fire scene. Topics included initial size up, which is communicating conditions to others responding and accountability. Accountability at a fire scene is knowing where everyone is and what they've been assigned to do. The tools and direction given tonight will save time, save property, and save lives.

With colder temperatures here, several of us will be using space heaters to supplement our homes heating. Here are a few tips to stay safe. Never use a power strip or extension cords for heaters or humidifiers. Also, turn off heaters when you leave the room or go to bed.

Another successful pancake breakfast. Thank you to everyone who donated to the cause, and everyone who attended. It was a packed house all morning. Thank you Charles City Police Department for letting Officer Luft live out his dreams of being a firefighter. He looks good in the truck, even if was just for a little while.

Tonight, we were called the 2100 block of Clark Street for a power pole on fire. Many people noticed that we didn't roll up and immediately start spaying it with water. This is because we were informed that the power was still on and if we had, we very well could have been electrocuted. Water conducts electricity and should never be used for an electrical fires. Only after MidAmerican disconnected the power, was it safe to approach and extinguish using a CO2, C type extinguisher. Alway use the proper extinguisher for the type of fire you have. Using the wrong extinguisher may not only not put out the fire, but it can also be dangerous and make things worse.

Tonight around 1:20 am we were awoken by a page to the 300 block of 6th Ave. for a small kitchen fire. Fortunately, everyone was out of the house by the time we arrived, and the fire had mostly put itself out. However, the house was full of smoke. After venting the home, we returned to the station and most of us were back in bed by 3. I am happy to say that several smoke detectors were alarming throughout the house on this call! You can help protect your family by planning and practicing a home fire escape plan! How many smoke detectors do you have in your home? When's the last time you tested them?
