You have the WHOLE month of March to pay your taxes. Please keep in mind that if you are mailing them in, to make sure they are Postmarked BY March 31st to avoid penalty. If you choose to wait until the last minute, be aware sometimes mail is not postmarked the same day you drop it in the box, so be sure to go inside the Post office and have them stamp the date on it.

There has been some recent discussions regarding the property tax credit for homeowners over 65 years old. I wanted to provide some additional information for the credit.

Legislation was passed and enacted during the 2023 legislative session to include an additional exemption for homeowners 65 year of age or older. The additional exemption removes $6,500 from the taxable valuation.

Eligibility: Must own and occupy the property as a homestead on July 1st of each year, declare residency in Iowa for income tax purposes, and occupy the property for at least six months each year. Persons in the military or nursing homes who do not occupy the home are also eligible. You must have turned 65 years of age by January 1st of the assessment year.

The annual deadline to apply is July 1st of the assessment year. If the exemption is granted, the exemption will be allowed for future years without future filing if the claimant continues to qualify.

The exemption is in addition to the homestead credit. For applications received by July 1, 2026, the exemption will be applied to taxes payable September 2027/March 2028.

Application forms can be found on your parcel page of the Assessor's website https://floyd.iowaassessors.com/search/res/ or by visiting the Floyd County Assessor’s Office. Please contact us by phone at (641) 257-6152 or by email at [email protected] if you have any questions.

A message from Auditor Morrigan Montagne regarding the upcoming special election. Please help spread the word.

"There was a miss print in the paper stating that the only polling place for the special election on Sept 23 is Messiah. This is incorrect. The only polling location is Trinity."
