The NNLM Region 2 office is located at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC The Medical University of South Carolina James W.

Colbert Education Center and Library serves as the Regional Medical Library (RML) for Region 2, which provides programs, services, and dedicated support for NNLM Members in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

🌟 Have you ever wanted to attend SC/MLA but haven't had the opportunity?

The Southern Chapter of the Medical Library Association's 2026 Annual Meeting is coming to Birmingham, Alabama, September 23–26, and the SC/MLA Honors & Awards Committee is offering First-Time Attendee Scholarships to help make it possible!

This year's meeting will be held at the Hilton Birmingham Downtown at UAB and offers an opportunity to learn, share ideas, strengthen professional partnerships, and connect with colleagues working in medical librarianship and health information services.

And there's plenty to explore outside the conference! Birmingham offers a rich history and vibrant arts and entertainment scene, including the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, 16th Street Baptist Church, Birmingham Museum of Art, Railroad Park, and the Uptown and Theater Districts.

🏆 Up to two First-Time Attendee Scholarships will be awarded, with awards of up to $1,000 to help cover travel, lodging, and meals. Registration and one CE course will also be covered. The CE requirement has been waived for 2026 because no CE will be offered at this year's meeting.

💜 August is Overdose Awareness Month.

This month is an opportunity to remember the lives lost to overdose, support families and friends who are grieving, reduce the stigma surrounding addiction, and share information that can help prevent overdose and save lives.

International Overdose Awareness Day is August 31, providing an opportunity to come together to raise awareness about overdose, promote education and prevention, and connect people with resources for treatment and recovery.

The NIH HEAL Initiative® (Helping to End Addiction Long-term®) is one trusted resource for learning more about efforts to address the opioid crisis. HEAL is an NIH-wide initiative working to improve prevention and treatment strategies for opioid misuse and addiction while advancing research on pain management.

What does it take to make biomedical data easier to discover, share, and reuse?

Join the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for Foundations for Interoperability: Data, Infrastructure, and Culture, a workshop taking place August 4–5, 2026.

This event will bring together experts in biomedical research, data science, and informatics to discuss how data, technology, and organizational culture all play a role in improving interoperability across the biomedical research ecosystem. Participants will explore challenges, share ideas, and help identify future opportunities for advancing scientific discovery, data reuse, and AI-enabled research.

The workshop is open to everyone and you can attend either in person at the NIH Campus in Bethesda, Maryland, or virtually.
