SECC is fortunate to have a resident in the Restorative Justice Organization, who knows the trade of “Hitched Horsehair”. This dying art form was originally started and taught in the Montana State Prisons in the early 1800s. These are Hitched Horsehair Hatbands to be worn around a Western hat. 100% natural & dyed horsehair is used. Over 20,000 open & closed hitched knots per hat band. There are 250 pulls per hatband which = 2500 horse hairs. It takes approximately 100 hours of labor to make one and they usually run anywhere from $175 to 250 online. SECC donates them for fundraising auctions!

The SECC RJO Garden has been thriving! They donate to two different food pantries weekly, SEMO Food Bank and Fish Pantry in Cape Girardeau. So far, they have donated over 3000 lbs. this year! The gardeners love trying new vegetables like India Snake Cucumbers and North Carolina Roasters. They also are very creative in gardening technics to solve problems. Training a squash plant up a stake and cutting the bottom leaves off to control fungus and making hammocks for large vegetables to keep them off the ground away from ground insects and to take the weight off the vines as they grow. Tell us some of your tips.

So much Easter joy! 🐣 Thanks to Monica Goodin and the Restorative Justice Organization at Southeast Correctional Center in Charleston for donating two large boxes of handmade items, cards, and games. Acts of kindness like this make a meaningful difference for our pediatric, obstetric and Level III NICU patients and families.
