Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This historic day serves as a reminder of the delayed justice many endured and the resilience shown through generations.

Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a time to reflect on freedom, history, resilience, and progress.

Today, we remember the Charleston 9 and honor the extraordinary sacrifice they made in service to others.

On June 18, 2007, nine Charleston firefighters lost their lives while responding to the Sofa Super Store fire. Their bravery, selflessness, and commitment to protecting their community continue to inspire us.

As we reflect on their legacy, we also recognize the strength of their families, fellow firefighters, and all those whose lives were forever changed. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

During a recent heat-related incident in Downtown Charleston, our public safety partners came together to provide prompt care, keep residents safe, and ensure emergency resources remained available for our community.

Thank you to everyone who played a role in this response. As the heat continues, remember to stay hydrated, take breaks in the shade, and look out for one another.

Expect heat index values between 108° and 112°, making it feel dangerously hot outdoors. Limit time in the sun, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and check on vulnerable family members, neighbors, and pets.

Even though Summer doesn’t technically start until next Saturday, we know it has officially arrived here in Charleston County.

Extreme heat is dangerous! Take care of yourself, family, and pets.

🚗 Don’t leave ANYONE inside a car, not even for a few minutes. Temperatures escalate quickly inside vehicles.

💧Hydrate! Being hydrated helps your body stay cool by sweating, so keep your water intake high.

👚Loose-fitting clothes allow your body to cool properly, and light colors absorb less heat from the sun.

🏡 Cool off frequently in shaded areas and air conditioned environments.

Hot and humid weather can make it harder for your body to stay cool, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Take a few simple steps to protect yourself and your loved ones while enjoying the weekend.

Stay Weather-Ready:
💧 Stay hydrated – Drink water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
🌳 Take breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces, especially during the hottest part of the day.
🧢 Dress for the heat – Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and check on family members, neighbors, and pets during periods of extreme heat.

The Charleston County Department of Public Safety is excited to welcome the 2026 participants of the Student Leadership Intern Program (SLIP)! 🎉

This unique partnership with Charleston County School District provides high school juniors with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public service, leadership, and local government. Throughout the summer, these students will explore career pathways, develop valuable skills, and engage with professionals dedicated to serving our community.

We extend our sincere thanks to Deputy County Administrator Eric Watson, Charleston County EMS Chief Chris Way, Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center Director Jim Lake, Charleston County Emergency Management Director Justin Pierce and Awendaw-McClellanville Fire Department Captain James Duley II for helping us welcome this outstanding group of future leaders.

We look forward to an exciting summer filled with learning, growth, and new experiences. Welcome to the team, SLIP interns!
