New CJCC Research Brief Released: Sexual Assault Data Trends & Community Resources in Charleston County

The Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC) has released a new research brief examining sexual assault data, jail booking trends, court processing times, and community resources across the county.

The brief also features an extensive list of local support services—including crisis hotlines, advocacy groups, mental health care, medical resources, housing supports, and food assistance programs—so individuals and families can quickly find help when they need it most.

Domestic Violence Trends in Charleston County: New CJCC Research Brief

Charleston County has seen a significant decline in domestic violence-related jail admissions - down 55% since 2012. However, since 2022, there's been a 35% uptick, highlighting the ongoing challenges in addressing and reporting domestic violence locally. Victimization rates for simple assault and intimidation have decreased (14% and less than 1%, respectively), but aggravated assault and murder/nonnegligent manslaughter rates have risen (15% and 13%, respectively). These trends mirror national patterns, emphasizing the need for continued research and improved reporting.

As we enter the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, we are joining partners across South Carolina in raising awareness about the importance of safe driving. This statewide initiative from the SC Department of Public Safety and SC Highway Patrol focuses on reducing crashes and preventing fatalities during one of the most dangerous times of the year on our roads.

In Charleston County, Driving Under the Influence continues to be one of the most common charges at the local detention center. This underscores how critical it is for all of us to make responsible choices behind the wheel.

We encourage everyone in our community to practice safe driving habits:
• Always drive sober
• Slow down and follow posted speed limits
• Avoid distractions, especially mobile devices
• Buckle up, every ride, every time
