On Tuesday, June 6th, at 9:21 PM, the James Island PSD Fire Department responded to a report of a residential structure fire. Units arrived on scene approximately 4 minutes from time of dispatch, and found an elevated two-story residence, with heavy fire on the front of the residence. Crews immediately began fire suppression with large handlines while waiting for additional resources.
The resident had already escaped from the residence before the arrival of the first unit and reported to the crew that no one else was home. He had been alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm and attempted to leave by the front door, but was blocked by the heavy fire, so he used the rear exit from the house to safely escape.
Crews from the James Island PSD Fire Department as well as the Charleston Fire Department fought the fire and had it under control in 45 minutes. Several crews were kept on scene to look for “hot spots” and to assist in the fire investigation. Crews were on scene until 1:35AM.
Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies assisted with traffic and scene control.
The fire is currently under investigation.
The James Island PSD Fire Department would like to remind everyone that the resident was saved by a working smoke alarm in his residence. Were it not for the smoke alarm, this fire would have had a far more tragic outcome. Please make sure your residence has working smoke alarms, and if you do not, please contact us or your local fire department to have smoke alarms installed. WORKING SMOKE ALARMS DO SAVE LIVES! We would also to remind everyone to always have a home fire escape plan and know two ways out of your residence.
