Adopt - A - Highway & Community Pride Charleston

Adopt - A - Highway & Community Pride Charleston Community Pride coordinates Charleston County’s Adopt- A-Highway program. There is an active Adopt-A-Highway program in each of the state’s 46 counties.

South Carolina's beautiful landscapes are one of the state's most precious natural resources. Not only that, with millions of tourists coming to the state each year, our scenic beauty is also an important economic resource, one we need to protect. In 1988, the Adopt-A-Highway program began in South Carolina, and has been one of the most successful programs in combating litter along our highways ev

er enacted. We believe this success comes from relying on individual citizens who genuinely care about the beauty of their state and want to take responsibility for enhancing that beauty. Adopt-A-Highway Coordinators and SCDOT’s Maintenance Offices oversee the program in their respective counties.

Please contact your Senator and ask them to support H.3047

Our neighbors in Georgia are in our thoughts as they respond to devastating wildfires.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp reported the fire started on Monday (on highway 82) was caused by a 🎈balloon landing on a power line, — a sobering reminder that released 🎈balloons can have consequences far beyond where they land.

Last week, the South Carolina House passed H.3047 in a 92–17 bipartisan vote, and it now heads to the Senate for a first reading. The bill would classify intentional and organized balloon releases as litter, discouraging mass releases that often become pollution in our waterways, farms, roadsides, marine and wildlife habitat.
It’s a practical step South Carolina can take right now to address a preventable problem. But time is short!

The legislative session ends May 14, and H.3047 needs to move quickly through the Senate to reach the Governor’s desk. If it doesn’t advance before the session ends, the bill dies.

We need your Voice right now. Contact your SC state senator and urge them to move H.3047 forward without delay. Find your Senator through the link here or in the comments https://www.scstatehouse.gov/legislatorssearch.php.

Better late then never!

A belated thank you to all the volunteers who came out to our Johns Island Spring Litter Cleanup.

Nearly 150 volunteers spent their Saturday morning picking up litter along along Main Road, Brownswood Road, and River Road.

Volunteers collected well over 3,000 pounds of trash! This is an incredible achievement and a major win for our coastal ecosystem.

This success would not have been possible without the support from our amazing partners, including Keep Charleston Beautiful, City Councilmember Jim McBride, County Councilmember Joe Boykin, the Charleston Police Department, Charleston Surfrider, the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Palmetto Pride, Charleston County, and our community leaders who helped us identify locations and lead volunteer groups.

We are incredibly grateful to work alongside such driven groups who are passionate about keeping our Lowcountry litter free.

This cleanup was even featured on Live 5 News - be sure to check out the clip below!

Better late than never...

On March 9, 1985, the first-ever Adopt-a-Highway sign was installed on Texas’ Highway 69. The highway was adopted by the Tyler Civitan Club, whose members committed to picking up trash along a designated two-mile stretch of the road.

The Adopt-a-Highway program got its start roughly one year prior, when James Evans, an engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation, noticed litter blowing out of the back of a pickup truck while driving in Tyler, Texas. Evans became concerned about the cost of keeping highways clean and started asking community groups to volunteer to pick up trash. No one volunteered, but Billy Black, the public information officer for the Tyler District of the Texas Department of Transportation, took up his cause. Black organized the first official Adopt-a-Highway program, which provided training and equipment for volunteers. After the Tyler Civitan Club sign went up, other groups began volunteering to beautify their own stretches of highway.

The idea caught on across the United States and has since also been adopted in several other countries, including Canada, Japan, and New Zealand.

Sharing on behalf of our friends Keep Charleston Beautiful

Announcing the Greatest Charleston Cleanup!
A citywide spring event series supporting Keep America Beautiful’s nationwide Greatest American Cleanup in honor of America’s 🇺🇸250th birthday. The national goal is to remove 25 billion pieces of litter by July 4, 2026 — and we’re calling on our community to help Charleston do its part!

One day isn’t enough to care for a city as special as ours. That’s why we’re hosting five community-wide cleanup events across Charleston this spring — one in each area of the city. Each cleanup will partner with local organizations, businesses, and community leaders to ensure these are safe and impactful events. Exact meeting locations will be sent out to registered participants ahead of time.

We encourage residents of all ages to join the cleanup in their area and help us reach those hard-to-reach spaces that need a little extra care. Together, we’ll roll up our sleeves, work side by side, and show what community pride can accomplish!
Ready to get involved? Grab your friends, bring your family, invite your coworkers, tell your neighbors, and be a part of something GREAT.

Secession Camp #4 signed up with AAH in 2004, which is 2️⃣1️⃣ years ago! ⭐️🏆⭐️

Six hardworking💪 volunteers spent three and a half hours removing litter along Glenn McConnell Blvd in West Ashley. Their total bag removal came to a whopping 2️⃣8️⃣ bags of trash, plus 2️⃣tires, which equals 4️⃣7️⃣5️⃣lbs of litter.
