Yesterday was a busy day for members of the Sissonville Fire Department. Crews attended a community event at Elk River Nazarene Church, where they had the opportunity to meet new people, answer questions, and represent the department.

While attending the event, crews were dispatched to a rescue call near Whittington Road after a dog fell approximately 6 feet into a drain culvert. Firefighters responded to the scene and were able to safely rescue the dog.

From community outreach to emergency response, our members are always ready to answer the call wherever they are needed. We appreciate the opportunity to engage with the public and are thankful this rescue had a happy outcome.

🏊☀️ Pool season is here, and the Sissonville Fire Department wants to remind everyone that a few simple safety steps can help prevent a fun day from becoming an emergency.

Pool Safety Tips:

• Never leave children unattended around water — even for a few seconds.
• Designate a responsible adult as a “water watcher” and avoid distractions like phones.
• Keep gates and pool barriers closed and secured •Bright, highly visible bathing suit colors matter. Neon colors like bright orange, yellow, pink, and green can be easier to see in the water, while darker colors and some blues can become difficult to spot underwater.
• Use flotation devices that are Coast Guard-approved for the best level of safety and protection. • Keep life jackets and flotation devices nearby, especially for inexperienced swimmers.
• Avoid running around the pool area to prevent slips and falls.
• Learn CPR — those first few moments during an emergency can make a difference.
• Keep a phone nearby in case you need to call for help.

Remember: Drowning is often quick and silent. Stay alert, stay prepared, and help keep your family and our community safe this summer.

Have fun, stay cool, and make safety part of every pool day! 🚒

⚠️ FLOOD WATCH – KANAWHA COUNTY ⚠️

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch that includes Kanawha County through late tonight. Scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening could produce an additional 1–2 inches of rainfall, which may lead to rising creeks, streams, and areas of roadway flooding.

Please remember:

• Never drive through high water covering a roadway. You do not know the depth of the water or if the roadway beneath has been damaged. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

• If you live in an area prone to flooding, closely monitor water levels and changing conditions. Do not wait until water is already impacting your property — allowing yourself extra time to evacuate if needed can make a difference.

The Sissonville Fire Department crews are prepared and ready to respond to water-related emergencies as conditions develop.

Stay weather aware, use caution while traveling, and continue to monitor updates throughout the day and tonight

🇺🇸☔ Memorial Day weekend is here — a time to remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, we also want everyone to keep safety in mind.

Rain is in the forecast, and while we know the weather in West Virginia likes to keep everyone guessing, a little extra caution can go a long way.

Memorial Day Weekend Safety Tips:

• Slow down on wet roads — your destination will still be there when you arrive.
• Turn your headlights on when driving in rain so others can see you.
• Never drive through flooded roadways. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
• If you’re grilling, keep grills away from homes, decks, and anything that can catch fire.
• If you’re enjoying time outdoors, keep an eye on changing weather conditions.
• Don’t let celebrations become distractions — stay alert and make safe choices.

And yes... if you see puddles, your inner child may want to drive through them at 40 mph — resist the temptation. Your vehicle (and whoever you splash) will thank you.

Most importantly, take a moment this weekend to remember what Memorial Day is truly about.

From all of us at the Sissonville Fire Department, have a safe Memorial Day weekend and stay weather aware. 🚒

☀️ It’s that time of year again… warmer weather is here, pools are opening, and we’ve started getting questions about filling swimming pools.

We wanted to let everyone know that our department is unable to fill swimming pools. While we understand the convenience, unauthorized use of fire hydrants is illegal and is only permitted for approved purposes such as firefighting, maintenance, and other pre-authorized activities.

Another important factor is water quality. We cannot guarantee the cleanliness or quality of water carried in fire apparatus tanks. Water can sit in truck tanks for extended periods of time, and at times apparatus may be filled from creeks, ponds, portable water tanks, and other water sources during emergency operations. Our trucks are designed and intended for firefighting operations, not for providing clean water for swimming pools.

Unauthorized hydrant use is important to avoid because it can:

• Damage hydrants and make them inoperable during a fire emergency
• Cause water main breaks that can interrupt service to surrounding homes and businesses
• Impact the water system that our community relies on every day

Fire hydrants are a critical part of emergency response infrastructure and must remain available and ready when our community needs them most.

We appreciate everyone’s understanding and encourage residents to contact local pool water providers for filling services. Stay safe, enjoy the warmer weather, and have a great pool season! 🏊🚒
