This is a page to share photos, remember, reminisce and discuss our memories of West Ashley past and present and to discuss our future wishes, hopes and dreams for this beautiful land west of the Ashley. Our mission is to keep West Ashley residents better informed about events and developments that affect our community and to stimulate an open, uncensored and creative dialogue about how to preserve our heritage, better our quality of life, show community support for our wonderful West Ashley businesses/services and to foster a greater sense of community and cohesiveness for those areas west of the Ashley River, specifically the neighborhoods and business districts served by the City of Charleston and the St. Flanked by the scenic waterfront vistas and marshes of the Ashley and Stono Rivers and ancient moss draped oak trees, West Ashley's initial neighborhoods were developed in the 1950s with its largest growth occurring throughout the 1970s and 80s. As Interstate 526 was built in the early 1980s and the Glenn McConnell Parkway was built in the 1990s to help alleviate traffic on the historic Ashley River Road (SC Hwy. 61) corridor, the area saw explosive residential and commercial growth. Major retailers located in the community as land needed for "big box" stores was not available on the historic downtown Charleston peninsula. West Ashley's original neighborhoods line Savannah Highway (US Hwy 17) in an area closest to the historic Charleston peninsula. Its first retail district in the Avondale area, built in the 1950s, is seeing a revitalization with many art and design oriented businesses having located there in recent years. SPECIAL NOTE: We respectfully ask that topics of discussion are limited solely to the area known as West Ashley proper and that all posts are specific and relevant to West Ashley. These are the areas served by the City of Charleston and those in unincorporated Charleston County served by the St. We appreciate your support of our page and thank you for limiting your discussions to those involving West Ashley.
