Message from Mayor Mike Baumgartner:

The Charleston Fire Department recently underwent a Public Protection Classification (PPC) survey, commonly known as an ISO inspection. These inspections evaluate the structural fire suppression services our community provides, including our fire department, water system, and other resources that contribute to our ability to respond to fires. ISO ratings are also used by many insurance companies when determining property insurance rates, so improvements in our classification can have a direct benefit for homeowners.

I am very pleased to announce that Charleston’s rating has improved within the city limits! The new rating will take effect in December and will hopefully result in lower homeowners insurance rates for many Charleston residents.

Achieving an improved rating takes a great deal of work, coordination, documentation, and preparation. I want to thank the City of Charleston staff and the Charleston Fire Department for their hard work and cooperation throughout this process. I especially want to recognize Heather Tygart, Josh Brewton, Luke Verkamp, and Shawn Lovett. This truly was a team effort, but each of these individuals played a pivotal role in helping us achieve this improvement.

I am proud of the work our employees and firefighters continue to do to improve the services we provide to our citizens. An improved ISO rating is another example of how investing in our people, equipment, infrastructure, and public safety can produce real benefits for our community.
