Bischoff's Square

Bischoff's Square Originally comprised of 17 houses (11 remaining) built for Mrs. Henry Bischoff on Columbus, East Bay, and Drake Streets. it's adjacent to the Cigar Factory.

Seven fronted Columbus and four each on the other streets. Each wooden house was 2 1/2 stories with piazzas and had six rooms. Bischoff's Square was the name given to an 1880 development of 17 similar houses in the Hampstead Village area of Charleston. Hampstead Village is now known as Eastside. The boundaries are East Bay, Columbus Street and Drake Street. This area also was known has Hampstead

hill as is one of the original higher elevations in Charleston. Because of this, we don't experience the flooding that other areas do. Prior to its development the area was an old Half Moon Battery, part of the early defense of the city of Charleston. The houses were constructed 1880 by Wellings & Gleason, contractors and were built for Mrs. Henry Bischoff. Five of the houses were built on Bay (now East Bay) Street, seven on Columbus Street, and five on Drake Street. Wellings & Gleason were the contractors for the Bay Street dwellings. Each was a 2½ story wood house. There are 11 houses remaining. 2 on East Bay, 4 on Columbus and 5 on Drake. The houses on Columbus are unique for having a bay window on the front facade.
