The League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area - LWVCA - is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. Our chapter serves Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties of coastal South Carolina. The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles. * Voters' Services/Citizen Education: We present unbiased non-partisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues. * Action/Advocacy: We are also non-partisan, but, after study, we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest. The League of Women Voters, a membership organization, conducts action and advocacy and is a non-profit 501(c)(4) corporation. To conduct our voter service and citizen education activities, we use funds from the League of Women Voters of the United States Education Fund, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a non-profit educational organization.

A big thanks to LWV Charleston members who made the trip to Columbia today to lobby for redistricting reform - elections should be decided in the voting booth, not the map room! Call your legislator and tell them you want an independent redistricting commission. #lwv100 #womenpowerthevote #peoplepoweredfairmaps

We are at the State House today, asking our legislators for redistricting reform. Couldn’t be here with us? Call or write your legislator and tell them that you want an independent redistricting commission to draw district lines NOT legislators drawing their own lines. Did we mention it’s our Centennial?!? #lwv100 #womenpowerthevote #peoplepoweredfairmaps

We have supported and pushed for the ratification of the ERA since 1972. Now that the amendment has passed the 38-state threshold for ratification, Virginia becoming the 38th state to ratify the amendment, there are a few more things that must happen before it is added to our constitution. Learn about the next steps in the process of enshrining the ERA into the US Constitution here:

What does gerrymandering have to do with civil rights? - Virginia Mercury

"Gerrymandering, where legislators draw district lines to benefit themselves and preserve their seats, is a form of voter suppression because it takes power from voters. Some voices end up more powerful than others."

LWVSC was a signatory to this article that appeared in the Virginia Mercury yesterday. In one week, we will be having a Lobby Day in Columbia to ask our legislators for People Powered Fair Maps.

https://www.virginiamercury.com/2020/02/04/what-does-gerrymandering-have-to-do-with-civil-rights/

Virginia has an important decision to make. Its General Assembly should pass the constitutional amendment for redistricting, signaling to other southern states a new era of nondiscriminatory access to the ballot box. Gerrymandering, where legislators draw district lines to benefit themselves and pre...

“It’s about the right time for Virginia to be on the right side of history.” Words of the ERA resolution sponsor in the Virginia House just before both the House & Senate approved the measure, making the Commonwealth the pivotal 38th state to ratify. Here’s the vote in the House.

Happy Veterans Day! Today, we want to introduce you to Dee Woodward, our friend in the Sumter League of Women Voters, who was recently recognized by LWV United States in the #SheIsMe campaign:

"Dee's desire to be part of an organization that makes a real difference in people's lives led her to the League of Women Voters while she was still an active duty service member. Now, this Air Force veteran and college educator works tirelessly to motivate her students, neighbors, - indeed anyone she meets - to register and vote. She believes the best way to support underrepresented voters is to help them use their voice."

Thank you Dee, and all of our other veterans. Happy Veterans Day from the League of Women Voters of the Charleston Area! #veteransday #SheIsMeLWV

2020 Census | United States Census Bureau

Fake Census Mailers: We have learned that some people in South Carolina (as well as several other states) have received mail saying "2019 Congressional District Census." It is very important to participate in the census when it begins in the spring of 2020, but anything solicited prior to that time is not part of the U.S. Census.

· The only official U.S. census form comes directly from the U.S. Census Bureau.
· Any survey by an outside group mentioning the census is not part of the official U.S. Census.
· Anyone who has participated in these surveys should still plan to participate in the U.S. census starting in March 2020.

Earlier this week you saw a picture of one of our great volunteers, Carolyn Wright-Porcher, registering new voters. We are so thankful that Carolyn shares her time and expertise with us. Here she is, in her own voice: "I know that working with the League gives me the opportunity to share with all women, especially those women of color, the importance of voting and civil rights and the impact in our communities. My joining the League and advocating for women has been fulfilling. I plan to continue my work with the League and hopefully move to make it diverse for all women." ~Carolyn Wright-Porcher #lwv100 #sheismelwv

I'm proud to announce that my British husband, Tim Cantopher, will be sworn in as a USA citizen at his naturalisation hearing on Monday 20 May at 1:30pm. Just in case any of you need to see something uplifting, we'll be at the USCIS Office at 1821 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. And YES you'd better believe he will register to vote and exercise his right to vote in our next election. I'd like to think he was inspired to become a citizen because he has heard me talk about how hard the League works and what a difference that work makes on voter registration and education amongst other things. He loves his adopted country as much as we all do!
