Q***r Agenda (QA) is an inevitable necessity for Appalachia: WV has some of the highest rates of openly trans youth; WV has a homelessness epidemic, with overwhelming presence of q***r folx on the streets nationwide, and lots of q***r artists/musicians demanding space by taking to the streets for survival; WV is trying to survive while being a federally recognized environmental sacrifice zone. This means we make radical spaces here out of NECESSITY, protection, and outreach…we have to share the struggle with each other. When we are relying on ourselves to become the solution for our own community’s struggles, this means relying on individuals that are in the midst of LIVING the struggles of mental illness, trauma, poverty, neglect, exploitation…This makes the need for radical safe spaces even more urgent, but this also means our folx running QA and other q***r oriented spaces in Appalachia have to pace ourselves when taking on the weight of the world while simultaneously struggling through the everyday realities of our own mental health issues and sh*tty economics.
QA’s house needs work done: the basement needs renovations to fix the foundation of the house and better ways to sound proof the walls for shows to continue. There is a plethora of ways to pull this off, but it will take time. OUR amazing Community will have to come together to take care of itself to host q***r radical bands for a season
QA is here to host shows for the long haul, but currently, we have to put more focus towards self care in order to be the communal space we strive to continue being.
