The Huguenot Society of South Carolina deeply regrets the recent passing of Mr. John Thomas Hilton. Mr. Hilton was a member since 1973 and served as an officer on the Board. He joined under ancestors Jérémie Cothonneau and Marie Billon. The Society will always be appreciative of Mr. Hilton's support and enthusiasm for preserving the memory of our Huguenot ancestors. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Valued Members,
A gentle reminder about membership renewals. I have sent an email to all members who are outstanding for 2026 renewal. I understand from conversations this summer that some members never received the renewal notices that were mailed in June. I hope reaching out via email will help us contact those members who are outstanding. We have three easy means of payment: online, via telephone and via paper mail. Part Three (final) of our story of the Timothée-Vilain family continues in the August edition. The son, Peter, inherits the business by way of his widowed mother and marries only to have twelve children and bury at least six. He enters the action of the patriot movement just one year after having to take a break from printing to watch over his family after his son becomes ill and Peter is recovering from "the fever." Their story is very much like many colonial stories - hardships, loss, building a business, and highly engaged in the fight for liberty. In the end, another accident leaves a widow to see her son to majority and pass the business along to him. It is a mini-series just waiting to be made!

While the Society's Secretary, Richard (Rick) Wilson, is enjoying Vitré, France, he shared with us an enjoyable podcast episode. This episode inspires us to think about refugee descendants returning to France to visit their ancestral regions and possible connections. Approximately mid-way through are comments from some members of the Ravenel family (in English and French). At about 19:44 and onward Mr. Wilson's remarks may be enjoyed. Charleston is mentioned as well. We are pleased to share this podcast onward and perhaps it will inspire some family trips to France!

Via the description included with the podcast: "The Ravenels, who came from a family of merchants and nobles around Vitré, are a good example of this (returning to France). Although the family became important in the 19th century in the United States, some members returned relatively quickly from the English colonies in America, before sometimes leaving for the countries of the European Refuge. When Bertrand Van Ruymbeke told this story to Antoine Gouritin – creator of the podcast – and suggested that he meet members of the family who had decided to move back to Vitré, Antoine didn't hesitate for long..."

Enjoy a ride into the New Bordeaux cross site with us as we remember the settlement of 262 years ago. "Settled in 1764, under the leadership of Pastors Jean Louis Gibert, and Pierre Boutiton. Here they were joined later by Pastor Pierre Gibert, and here many of their descendants still dwell...at least seventeen of the men and boys who settled at New Bordeaux in 1764 aided in establishing American independence." This is an ONE OF A KIND REMAINING ORIGINAL printing of the broadside printed by Huguenot descendant Peter Timothy. On exhibit just through August. Members of the Society may pick up a companion guide to the exhibit at headquarters or call the office to have an emailed copy provided. We encourage all to see the entire Ringleaders exhibit - the Museum has a wonderful exhibit and many items connect to Huguenot ancestors.
