Phone: 217-639-5165

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) affords individuals 55 and older opportunities to contribute to the life of Coles County through volunteer service. The RSVP staff matches individual interests, experience, abilities, and preferences with areas of community need. Schools, nursing homes, the LifeSpan Center, the Veterans' health clinic, and other community organizations benefit from t

he skill and energy of our volunteers. For several years the RSVP program has sponsored VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). This program assists people of all ages in filing their taxes. In Fiscal Year 2015, more than 1,200 returns were processed confidentially and in accordance with federal law in the LifeSpan Center. Since 1973, RSVP has been a vital part of Coles County. RSVP receives funding from the Corporation for Community and National Service, the Illinois Department on Aging, and internal fund-raisers, such as the annual Jonah Fish Fry. During 2014, 248 volunteers served 20,587.50 hours at 36 different sites or events through RSVP. In the lifetime of the RSVP, over 1000 volunteers have served over 694,115 hours.

Another awesome turnout at our Veterans Coffee in September! Lots of stories and valuable information shared among all who attended. Thanks to Jake LaChapelle from the Veterans Affairs office in Charleston for talking with us, and to Carolyn Cloyd of the United Way, who spoke to us about her family's military history, and to Mr. Roger Sorenson who shared pictures and stories about his service in WWII! Many, many thanks to all those who have served our country, no matter what era or what age. We are honored to have you as our guests, and hope to see more of you next month on October 21st!

What do RSVP volunteers do to celebrate September 11, National Day of Service and Remembrance, or Patriot's Day? They bake cookies and deliver them to our local Fire Stations and Police Departments! Thank you to our Coles County Firefighters and Policemen and women for putting on those uniforms every day to keep us safe from harm, even if it means putting yourselves at risk. We appreciate you!!

Would you like to volunteer, but can't make a large time commitment? Consider our Pen Pal program! RSVP volunteers are assigned 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade children, either in Charleston or Mattoon. You will meet your child in late September, and then write one short letter to them each month. Your Pen Pal will write back to you, with the guidance of their teacher, helping build literacy, hand writing, and communication skills. Near the end of the school year, we will have a Pen Pal party for each volunteer to meet their child again, and have a celebration! Pen Pal volunteers are needed now! Call Barbara, Cheryl, or Karen at 217-639-5165 for more information. :)
