Texas is funding three new memorials for mass shooting victims. This brings the state to over a dozen permanent tributes.

Alyssa Rheingold, Ph. D., NMVC director of Response, Recovery, & Resilience, spoke to the Houston Chronicle about the critical role memorials play in community recovery. She discussed supporting “concentric circles of victims” which includes family members of those killed, survivors, witnesses, responders, community. She encouraged memorial planners to craft a mission statement that encapsulates the intent of the monument and to think about where the money not only to build, but also to maintain the monument will come from.

This year, the Texas Legislature approved memorials for mass shooting victims in Uvalde, Santa Fe and Centerville. The memorials display names of more than 150 Texans killed.
