8/31/26 EDIT: Thank you, CLCS, for giving attention to this position’s title. It helps clarify Ms. Harper’s expected contribution to students. It also helps preserve the integrity of my profession and other professional clinical and school counselors.
******************************
As a former CLCS parent, I find this deeply concerning. What counseling credentials does this new staff member hold? I am a Licensed Counselor with more than 20 years of experience, and I can say confidently that not just anyone is equipped to do this work. While her business background (MBA) is noted, I do not see any indication of a master’s degree in a counseling related field or a license to practice as a counselor.
The need for trained mental health professionals is significant everywhere, but it is especially critical in environments where we are shaping and supporting young people. Cross Lanes Christian School students deserve to work with a qualified professional—particularly at a time when anxiety and depression are reaching epidemic levels among youth.
In my practice, my staff and I routinely work with students experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, and the effects of bullying, among other challenges. These issues are present in all school settings, including Christian schools. For the safety and well being of students, roles involving counseling should be filled by individuals with appropriate clinical training and licensure.
I strongly encourage parents to ask direct questions, request clarity about this individual’s credentials, and advocate for licensed mental health professionals in roles that involve counseling or student support. Our children’s well being depends on it.

We would like to introduce our new academic advisor, Mrs. Bethany Harper!

Mrs. Harper is a familiar face on campus as a faithful and frequent substitute teacher. She grew up in Ripley, WV, and earned her Master of Business Administration from Marshall University, where she worked in the Admissions Office. She is married to Mark Harper. They have two daughters, Peyton and Emma, who are current students at our school and members of the hand bell choir.

As a member of our administrative team, Mrs. Harper assists students with scheduling, standardized testing and college entrance exams, dual enrollment, transcripts, oversees our AP program, and provides students with post-secondary planning assistance.

Crocheting and reading are two hobbies Mrs. Harper enjoys. Her favorite Bible verse is:
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
