A little Feel-Good Friday from Ralph H. Johnson VA HCS! 💙🇺🇸

102 years young — and still plenty of wisdom to share.

World War II U.S. Navy Veteran and Seabee Mr. Passarello recently spent some time with our Director and CEO Scott Isaacks and members of our VA team.

And when asked his secret to a long life? His advice is pretty simple: unplug the television, stay active, and keep your mind sharp with puzzles and crosswords.🧩

Mr. Passarello also continues to give back through volunteer service here at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. If that’s not inspiration, we don’t know what is! 💙

There’s much more to his story, and we look forward to sharing it with you soon.

But for now, Mr. Passarello, thank you for your service!

💙 🇺🇲 Michelle, thank you for your service and for trusting Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System with your care!

This week, we’re proud to recognize U.S. Air Force Veteran Michelle Carpenter as our Veteran of the Week.

Michelle says her VA care team has made her feel heard from day one. She also appreciates the thorough coordination and follow-up that keep her informed about the next steps after each appointment.

Her experience reflects the heart of Veteran-centered care: listening first, communicating clearly and making sure every Veteran feels valued, informed and supported throughout their care.

Listening to Veterans isn’t just part of the care we provide. It’s where that care begins. 🤝

Representatives from the VHA’s Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias National Coordinating Center (ADRD NCC), based at Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System, joined Alzheimer’s and dementia experts from around the world July 12–15 at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) 2026 in London, United Kingdom.

Among those representing the center was Dr. Jacobo Mintzer, a psychiatrist at Ralph H. Johnson VA, who presented research from the LiBBY clinical trial.

The study focused on agitation, one of the most challenging symptoms experienced by people with advanced Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The trial found promising results in reducing agitation and improving comfort for people in the later stages of dementia.

The LiBBY trial is also helping show that people with advanced dementia can take part in meaningful clinical research, opening more opportunities to better understand treatment and care.

👏 We’re proud to see Ralph H. Johnson VA researchers contributing to work that could make a difference for Veterans, families and caregivers facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
