Clean Water Defense League

Clean Water Defense League Clean Water Defense League is a forum to aid citizens to more effectively support legislative action regarding the recent chemical spill in the Elk River.

The Clean Water Defense League

The CWDL is a grassroots group of concerned citizens who have been deeply impacted by the recent toxic chemical spill in the Elk River. Our purpose is to effectively channel those concerns by supporting legislative action in Charleston that will protect our water and prevent a recurrence of such a spill from ever happening again. Right now a number of bills have bee

n introduced in the legislature dealing with these issues. CWDL will keep members appraised of what the bills are, where they are in the legislative process and how citizens can effectively support their passage by contacting the appropriate committee chairs and their members at the appropriate time.

DETAILS: "Category A" designation is required for any water body to be considered a drinking water source. It protects water supplies for current and future drinking water use. Currently, a 70-mile stretch of the Kanawha River is exempt from this classification making it unavailable as a secondary source of drinking water for the 300,000 people who experienced the Freedom Industries chemical leak last year. If this exemption were removed, they would be one step closer to a having a backup water system.
