Photos from Back from Gaza: The Systematic Destruction of Healthcare

“The only people that are being allowed into Gaza right now are emergency medical teams, mostly doctors. The work I did in 2 weeks was a drop in the bucket—no, a drop in the ocean—of what they need. Now, I feel a responsibility to tell the stories of the people of Gaza and to report on what the world isn’t seeing, what is being ignored or purposely obscured…There is no ceasefire in Gaza. We heard bombs and gunfire every day and saw mass casualty events every day.

There are also people in Gaza dying because they are unable to access the type of health services they need, even at Shifa hospital where I was stationed, which was once a state of the art institution, but had been bombed and invaded by the Israeli military and is no longer fully functioning.

It’s a crime against humanity and a crime against the field of medicine.

Moreover, Israel has been in control of Gaza borders for decades, and they have not allowed in the amount of medical supplies needed to sustain Gaza’s healthcare system, leading to patients receiving suboptimal care that would be considered malpractice.

There is no cardiac surgery in Gaza. There is no chemotherapy in Gaza. Israel also restricts medical evacuations and I’ve seen patients who died because they were not allowed to evacuate to get the care they needed.”

Early Monday morning, a display modeling an MPR bomb appeared to have been installed in front of Elbit America on Palmetto Commerce Parkway in Ladson, advertising what is being manufactured at the facility.

This comes two weeks after a report from the Palestinian Youth Movement and Oxfam details Elbit's complicity in manufacturing weapons that are shipped through South Carolina's ports to Israel.

Between October 2023 and June 2024, over 1.1 million kg of bomb bodies were delivered to Israel by Maersk, including 925 tonnes of MPR family bomb bodies from Elbit America's “Ground Combat Vehicle Assembly and Integration Center of Excellence."

Elbit continues to manufacture in and ship directly from Charleston.

Yesterday, we held a press conference to show South Carolinas complicity in the genocide in Palestine. A recent PYM ( Palestinian youth movement ) report shows that Elbit systems of America, is manufacturing munitions for Israels continued bombing of Gaza.

“Weapons do not arrive at their destination by accident.
They are manufactured, financed, transported, and delivered through a network of actors whose participation makes their use possible.

When Maersk knowingly transports Elbit systems instruments of death to israel that is commiting genocide in Gaza, invading Lebanon, and inflicting unimaginable devastation to the Palestinians, it is not merely moving cargo from one point to another it is helping sustain the human grinding machinery that israel is operating.
For Palestinians living under bombardment, siege, displacement,and loss,these shipments are not abstract commercial transactions.

They are part of a chain of decisions that can shape whether a family remains in its home, whether a child grows up in safety, whether essential infrastructure survives. What appears on a shipping manifest as freight or cargo will be experienced on the ground as fear, destruction, displacement, injury, or death.

This is why we reject the characterization of such transportation as morally neutral. Commerce does not exist in a vacuum. When the consequence of a service is to help sustain a system that inflicts profound human suffering, the service itself becomes a matter of public concern.

No corporation should be permitted to hide behind the language of logistics while other countries bear the human cost.

Human life is not a line item on a balance sheet, and these shipments of Elbit system weapons cannot be separated from the deadly realities they are creating for the people of Palestine and Lebanon.

When human life is at stake, silence is not a civic virtue, and the lawful pursuit of accountability is not an act of disruption it is an act of duty and responsibility.“
