National Volunteer Month Spotlight: Barry Weber

Barry Weber brings both compassion and persistence to Alzheimer’s advocacy. Motivated by his own experience caring for his late wife, Barry has spent a decade building relationships with lawmakers, sharing the realities caregivers face, and helping advance practical policies that improve coordination, support and outcomes for families like his. His focus is on making the case for policies that expand caregiver support, strengthen the dementia workforce, and drive research — from state-level coordination to federal priorities.

“Alzheimer’s disease robbed the mind and eventually the dignity of life from a once proud mom, grandparent, and honored teacher,” said Barry. “I will celebrate the day when we are together and put Alzheimer’s in the ‘done column.’”

Steady persistence from advocates like Barry moves policy forward and brings us closer to our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. We thank Barry and invite you to join him: https://alz.org/get-involved-now/volunteer

For the last 18 years, Diana Colbath has collected T‑shirts from every Walk to End Alzheimer’s she has attended. Recently, she stitched them together into something truly remarkable – a quilt filled with memories, commitment and hope.

Diana has spent decades caring for those living with dementia. She joined Comfort Keepers, an in-home care provider for older adults, in 2008 and just two months later took part in her first Walk to End Alzheimer’s. She hasn’t missed a year since.

As a proud member of the Comfort Keepers Walk to End Alzheimer’s National Team, Diana walks, fundraises and stands alongside others connected by a shared mission: a world without Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Drawing on a lifelong passion for sewing — one that began as a child on her grandmother’s old sewing machine — Diana stitched each shirt into a quilt that captures nearly two decades of dedication to the cause.

Upon completion, she donated the quilt to her local Comfort Keepers office, where it hung proudly before making its way to their national headquarters. Today, it stands as a symbol of dedication and care, made by a woman whose heart is truly woven into our mission.

Thank you, Diana, for your dedication, creativity and unwavering support of families facing dementia. Today, on , we are celebrating you. Your work and your quilt remind us that every stitch can tell a story. 💜🧵

We know that members of the LGBTQ+ community can face unique challenges when dealing with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. And we believe that all communities should have a fair and just opportunity for early diagnosis and access to risk reduction and quality care.

That’s why, alongside our national partners, we provide resources for LGBTQ+ people impacted by dementia: alz.org/lgbtq.

During National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week, and always, we remain committed to advancing health equity.

We’re excited to share a special video recap from West Virginia’s Alzheimer's Advocacy Day! Our incredible advocates shared why they’re passionate about fighting Alzheimer’s and it’s a reminder of the power of advocacy.

We’re also thrilled to celebrate the passage of House Bill 4474. The bill reauthorizes the Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Task Force through July of 2030 and positions the body to assist in implementation of the soon to be published State Plan on Alzheimer's and Other Dementia.

And if you want to make an impact, join us at alzimpact.org.
