Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is a historic house with gardens located on the Ashley River in South Carolina.
(4622)

It is one of the most picturesque gardens in the South, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Welcome to Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, a historic Lowcountry destination where timeless beauty and rich heritage coexist. Nestled on the banks of the Ashley River in Charleston, this iconic estate features extraordinary gardens, a spectacular swamp, and a storied past that spans more

than three centuries. From breathtaking azaleas and camellias to tranquil waterways and Spanish-moss-draped oaks, Magnolia invites you to explore nature’s splendor and the legacy of generations. At Magnolia, visitors can walk through the Romantic gardens originally developed in the 1840s by the Rev. John Grimké Drayton, who introduced groundbreaking plantings like outdoor camellias and expansive azalea beds. The 60-acre Audubon Swamp lends a quieter, nature-filled experience where native wildlife thrives and towering cypress trees frame the scene. More than a scenic garden, Magnolia is deeply rooted in American history. The plantation first opened to the public in 1871, making it one of the nation’s earliest visitor-attractions. Today, the estate thoughtfully honors the men, women and children—enslaved and free—who planned, planted, and maintained the grounds in tours and exhibits such as the “From Slavery to Freedom” program. Follow us on Facebook for updates, seasonal highlights, and immersive cultural experiences. Your journey into nature, history, and wonder begins here.

Hanging like vibrant red lanterns against maple-shaped leaves, Abutilon brings an airy elegance to our Lowcountry garden beds 🩷

Native to the South American Andes, this striking beauty has a rich history, indigenous communities historically used it for medicine, while its strong fibers were woven into fishing nets and clothing. Now, these curiosity-sparking bells bring us joy from May through September!

The grace of the marshes 🌿🤍

Often called the "Lady of the Waters," the Tri-colored Heron is one of our most elegant summer residents. You can often spot them wading gracefully through our wetlands, moving with quiet, deliberate precision. It’s a peaceful reminder of the incredible biodiversity that thrives here at Magnolia. Have you spotted one on your garden strolls?

Proof that getting up at dawn is always worth it 🦉

Barred Owls aren’t shy about being active in daylight, but early morning is their sweet spot. Right around sunrise, they’re finishing up their night hunt and often perch low in the trees, soaking in the first light.

Pro-tip for birders: Listen closely at first light for their famous “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all?” hoot!
