As the need in our community continues to grow, we have been wrestling with the question of where to store the surplus of food. We are beyond grateful to our partner, Transoceanic Containers, for their generous in-kind donation of a climate-controlled container.

Thank you, Transocean Equipment Management, LLC, for your dedication and sincere compassion toward our mission of uniting the community by helping our neighbors!

And thanks to the Exchange Club of Charleston SC for helping fund the upgrades to this container! 💙

At James Island Outreach, we’ve seen firsthand that food donations drop significantly during the summer months.

As a result, we are currently in the midst of our Annual Food Drive. This summer, we are once again aiming to reach our goal of 10,000 cans donated. We firmly believe that Every Can Counts, and with your help, we’re confident we can achieve this goal once more!

James Island Outreach

The James Island Outreach (JIO) was formed by area churches coming together to help those who had nowhere else to turn for assistance with the rebuilding of their storm damaged homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Over these past nearly 30 years, the mission of JIO has evolved and its services expanded.

In coordination with area public and private human services agencies, community volunteers and two paid part-time staff, JIO now provides crisis relief for Folly Beach and James Island residents in need of food and/or financial assistance for medications and utility maintenance. JIO is a non-profit, tax-exempt 501C3 agency that is registered with the Secretary of State in South Carolina and is wholly supported by area churches, businesses, community organizations and individuals through donated time, food and funds.

We serve an average of 150 clients and 350 family members per month. All our clients fall below the income limits established by established poverty guidelines. It might come as a surprise for many, but the poverty rate among James Island residents is 8.5%. The rate is 9.2% among Folly Beach residents. In other words, nearly 1 in 10 James Island and Folly Beach residents are impoverished.

JIO serves a diverse population -- 62% African American, 38% Caucasian, 68% female, 32% male and 60% over the age of 55. Our clients include elderly and disabled individuals who have a difficult time making ends meet on a fixed income, as well as younger, non-disabled individuals faced with income disruption. In many cases, our clients are living on social security or disability and are forced to make the difficult and unfair choice between going without food or their needed prescription medications. In 2017, JIO distributed 116,638 pounds of food to clients – an estimated value of approximately $195,000. We also provided $9,500 to clients in need of funds for utility maintenance and medical assistance.
