Home Base mourns the loss of an iconic American hero — Congressional Medal of Honor (CMOH) recipient Retired Colonel Bruce P. Crandall.

Crandall received the CMOH in 2007 for his actions in the Vietnam War in 1965.

During the Battle of Ia Drang, the first major conflict of the war, he voluntarily flew 22 missions in an unarmed helicopter to evacuate dozens of wounded troops while facing intense enemy fire.

Crandall’s CMOH citation states that his “daring acts of bravery and courage in the face of an overwhelming and determined enemy are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.”

His heroism was later recounted in the 1992 book “We Were Soldiers Once… and Young” and portrayed in the 2002 film “We Were Soldiers.”

Ret. Col. Bruce Crandall received the Medal of Honor for repeatedly flying his helicopter into intense enemy fire to evacuate dozens of wounded troops.

"To our Fallen Heroes, we remember you, we honor you, and we will never forget you."

Last month, Home Base continued the annual tradition of planting 37,000 flags on Boston Common to represent and honor every brave Massachusetts Service Member who lost their lives serving our Nation since the Revolutionary War.

The following day, Massachusetts Fallen Heroes and their Families were honored with a moving name reading ceremony, including the laying of a yellow wreath to mark expanded outreach to pre-9/11 Military Bereaved Families.
