Saturday, June 22. Boaters Safety Class. This class is for young power boaters, all PWC operators and anyone wishing to enhance their safety knowledge. It will be held at the Charlevoix Yacht Club Annex (209 Ferry Avenue) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is open to the public (with appropriate age) - either DOB after 6-30-1996 for operating a power boat or any age person operating a Personal Water Craft. The course will be presented by Glen Stolt, Flotilla Commander and members of our local US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and will provide participants with their State of Michigan approved Boater Safety Certificate.
The course cost is $20 cash or check (made out to USCG Auxiliary). This cost includes the cost of the Boaters' Safety Certificate.
Registering ahead is required to ensure we have course materials for each participant. Lunch will not be provided. Please bring your own box/bag lunch and drink. Coffee/water will be provided. BOAT AMERICA is a boating certificate class that offers an in-depth and interesting boating safety course, and provides the knowledge needed to obtain a boating certificate.
Some insurance companies will also offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course.
Boat America covers:
*Introduction to Boating – Types of power boats, boating vocabulary, sailboats, paddle boats, powering boats, and engine types.
*Boating Law – Boat registration, regulations, hull identification numbers, required safety equipment, Federal boating law, state boating law, and reporting accidents.
*Safety Equipment –Life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, visual distress signals, anchors, and other safety equipment.
*Safe Operation and Navigation – Buoys and beacons, aids to navigation, navigation rules, docking, and the dangers of alcohol on the water.
*Boating Emergencies – Hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather.
*Trailering, Storing and Protecting Your Boat – Types of trailers, lights, hitches, towing a trailer.
*Sports and Boating – Water-skiing, hunting and hunting gear, PWC operation, and other boating tips.
