Know your water. Protect your health.

It’s Drinking Water Week- a time to recognize the importance of safe, reliable water for our communities.

More than one million Michigan households rely on private wells for drinking water. Unlike public systems, private wells are not routinely monitored, so it’s up to homeowners to:
✔ Test water regularly
✔ Inspect and maintain wells
✔ Watch for contamination risks

Many contaminants have no taste, smell, or color—testing is the only way to know your water is safe.

Take a moment this week to learn more about your water and take action to protect it.

Clean hands are one of the easiest ways to stay healthy!

This World Hand Hygiene Day, remember FACES to know when to wash your hands:
F – Food (before eating or cooking)
A – Animals (after pets or backyard birds)
C – Caregiving (after helping others)
E – Exposure (after coughing, sneezing, or bodily fluids)
S – Special situations (after the restroom, garbage, or being outside)

Taking a few seconds to wash your hands can help protect you, your family, and your community.

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) is April 20–27, 2026. This week highlights the importance of protecting infants and young children from serious vaccine preventable diseases.

The Northern Michigan Public Health Alliance encourages families across our region to keep children up to date with routine vaccinations recommended in the AAP’s evidence based immunization schedule. This schedule is developed using the best available science to ensure vaccines are given at the safest and most effective times.

If you have questions about your child’s vaccine schedule or need to make an appointment, contact your healthcare provider or local health department.

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD), observed every year on April 16, encourages patients, families, and healthcare providers to engage in advance care planning.

NHDD is about making sure your healthcare wishes are known, documented, and honored during a medical crisis. Taking time to talk with loved ones and complete advance directives can bring clarity, reduce stress, and ensure your preferences guide your care.

The Northern Michigan Public Health Alliance encourages all adults to:
• Start conversations with family or caregivers
• Document your healthcare wishes
• Review your decisions regularly

NHDD is led nationally by The Conversation Project, a movement dedicated to helping people talk about their values and what matters most in their healthcare. Learn more at https://theconversationproject.org/.
