Committee to Elect Luther Kurtz

Committee to Elect Luther Kurtz Charlevoix local Luther Kurtz is the Mayor of Charlevoix. He was elected to the Mayor position November 8th, 2016. Please share your questions or comments.

Mayor Kurtz uses this page to communicate with the citizens of Charlevoix. Positive Charlevoix. I ran for the Charlevoix Mayor position because I want to lead our beautiful city to a vibrancy and community connectivity that is good for both our visitors and our locals. We have some challenges to overcome, like housing. But we are on a roll with our downtown, a place that everyone should feel good

about connecting with the community. Our city is becoming an amazing food, arts, entertainment, walk/bike friendly, and outdoor recreation destination. I love it here and I look forward to working with all of you to continue making it better for all of us.

Good evening, Charlevoix. I am honored that you have selected me to be your Mayor for another two years. With two fantastic candidates to choose from, I take this choice as strong support for my main campaign promise to continue fighting for better housing options for our year-round residents. I look forward to working with you on this promise moving forward. Positive Charlevoix.

This year I was invited to speak at the 2020 Housing Summit about the housing challanges our residents face here in Charlevoix. I am speaking about those challanges in response to the previous speakers discussion of the Housing Conservancy. If you are not familiar with the Housing Conservcancy, you can contact me (231-622-2052) or the team at Housing North (www.housingnorth.org) to learn more.

Charlevoix Neighbors:

As proposal 1 fades away we need to keep the enthusiasm for creating better housing solutions for our year-round working residents.

When knocking on doors, I get to learn more about the things you love about Charlevoix and also about some of the challenges some you face living here. A recurring topic is the challenge of finding reasonable housing.

Everyone always asks, what is affordable housing? And it certainly means something different to different people. But we have a crisis in Charlevoix that is making it difficult for our working residents of almost all income levels to find any reasonable housing in the City at all.

This is the single biggest thing I have been working on as Mayor of Charlevoix for the past four years. This year, I was invited to speak at the Housing Summit On October 22nd. I encourage anyone who is interested in this to join us as we discuss this important topic.

Also, several people have reached out to me about working on this topic at a committee level. I am putting a list together of interested people, so please message me at 231-622-2052 if you are interested in helping move us in the right direction with housing.

Pass the Positive: Please share this message and say something positive to someone in Charlevoix today.

I would like to thank Shirley Gibson for her kind comments in the paper this week. I have noticed three positive letters from Shirley over the past year. One letter was supporting the MDOT road construction in general. One letter was thanking the Cantina Mexican Restaurant for providing the nice tables for people to sit on in Van Pelt Alley. And now this letter, supporting me in my efforts to make our town more bike and pedestrian friendly, something I do care deeply about.

Though I cannot take credit for where MDOT placed the new cross walks, I do think our entire council deserves credit for advocating MDOT to improve the pedestrian and biking experience for our residents. With the knowledge that MDOT was planning to change the road, our city council unanimously voted to work with MDOT and request improvements to our road system at the same time. We requested, in cooperation with different school officials, better road markings, signs, and crossings near the schools located just South of downtown, including the area near our new elementary school. And we also requested, among other things, better crossings downtown and near the golf course.

But the most exciting thing we have accomplished this year is our improvement in how we are interacting with each other. We really do have a more positive Charlevoix this year and I think our entire council deserves some credit for this. Please help us continue the positive momentum we have and share this message for a more Positive Charlevoix.

Charlevoix's efforts in housing were recognized this week at the Housing Summit in Traverse City. Jonathan Scheel and I were invited to speak at the Summit. We discussed the need for more housing in our region for all income levels, and then what we are working on in the City of Charlevoix to provide solutions.

I spoke about the need for housing solutions, my interactions with our residents who are feeling this housing shortage, about our enthusiasm for helping provide housing solutions, and also about our collaboration with the surrounding townships to make sure we are all pulling in the same direction to provide solutions.

Jonathan (our zoning administrator) talked about what our planning commission is working on to encourage more housing options for people in Charlevoix, their efforts to study the community, and the ways in which some small changes to zoning may be able to encourage our residents to provide better year-round housing options with our current housing stock.

This is exciting stuff and I was excited to be able to share about our community efforts.
