Today family, friends and colleagues held an intimate gathering to dedicate a park bench in honor of Jim Malewitz. Jim was a critical partner in helping Hayes Township receive the grant money from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust fund that allowed the Township to purchase the beautiful twenty acres that is now known as Hayes Township Park – Camp Sea Gull. It was his and his firm, Performance Engineers, innovative boat launch design ideas that convinced the Trust Fund that the property was more than a beautiful piece of lakefront property but 20 acres of land that could be used for lake access via a beach and boat launch and the perfect spot for outdoor recreation thus awarding millions of dollars in grant money for the purchase of the park.

Jim went on to support the Township’s desire to develop the waterfront allowing residents and visitors alike to have access to Lake Charlevoix via a boat launch and fishing pier. He and his firm designed the existing amenities at the park and assisted helping to acquire the necessary grants for the funds to provide lake access.

His kindness, support and steadfast belief that the park was an asset for this generation and future generations to come is a testament to the man Jim was. The park is a true monument to his legacy. We will be forever grateful to Jim for helping with the acquisition and development of the extraordinary Hayes Township Park – Camp Sea Gull.

🎣 Attention anglers! This weekend, February 17th and 18th, marks Free Fishing Weekend on Drummond Island and all over the state. In adherence to the state of Michigan’s regulations, fishing enthusiasts, both residents, and out-of-state visitors, can enjoy Michigan’s premier outdoor activity without the need for a fishing license. This opportunity extends to both inland lakes and Great Lakes waters, encompassing all species of fish.

However, it’s crucial to exercise extreme caution when venturing onto any lake ice. Recent above-freezing temperatures have impacted ice conditions. To ensure safety:

1. Measure ice thickness: A minimum of 4 inches of clear, solid ice is recommended for walking and ice fishing. Snowmobiles require 5-7 inches, so please ensure you know your area is safe.

2. Be vigilant for cracks, seams, pressure ridges, or slushy areas, as they indicate weaker ice.

3. Avoid areas with vegetation, moving water, or structures like docks or bridges, as they may have thinner ice.

⚠️If you have any doubts about the safety of the ice, do not hesitate to avoid an area.

Stay safe and enjoy Free Fishing Weekend responsibly.
