🌡️ HOT WEATHER ALERT 🌡️

It’s going to be dangerously hot all weekend. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pets.

🐾 Keep walks short and avoid the hottest part of the day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.)
🐾 Always test pavement before heading out—the 7-second test can help prevent burned paw pads
🐾 Provide plenty of fresh water and shade
🐾 Never leave pets in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes
🐾 Watch for signs of heat stress including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or weakness

A little extra caution can help keep your pets safe, comfortable, and out of danger this weekend. ☀️💧

🚨💔 ONLY 6 KENNELS LEFT 💔🚨

We need our community today.

Not next week.
Not this weekend.
Today.

Right now, we have only 6 available dog kennels between both shelter locations. After responding to hundreds of calls for service and caring for a constant influx of animals, we have reached a point where space is no longer just a number on a spreadsheet.

It’s affecting the dogs.

Some of the dogs featured in this post are becoming increasingly stressed by shelter life. Some are shutting down. Some are acting out in ways they never would in a home. Days, weeks, and months of kennel living can take a toll, even on the very best dogs.

We are doing everything we can. Our staff, volunteers, fosters, and rescue partners are working tirelessly. We know many of our rescue partners are stretched beyond capacity themselves.

But today, we need more help.

Without significant movement through adoption, foster, rescue, and staycations, we may be faced with euthanasia decisions that we desperately want to avoid.

The dogs in this post don’t need perfection.
They don’t need a mansion.
They don’t need someone with all the answers.

They just need a chance.

🤝 Rescue

We know this situation is heartbreaking, but today we must help the animals already here. Please help us write a different ending for these dogs. Their future may depend on what happens today. 🤍🐾

Thank you, Charlotte!

Because of the incredible generosity of our community, sponsors, partners, donors, volunteers, and participants, Steps for Shelter Pets raised a total of $50,991 toward our goal of $54,000.

While we fell just short of our fundraising goal, we are incredibly proud of what we accomplished together. Every dollar raised will help provide medical care, enrichment, foster support, and other critical resources for the thousands of animals that enter Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control each year.

To everyone who donated, shared our mission, walked laps, sponsored the event, volunteered, or simply helped spread the word—thank you. Your support makes a meaningful difference in the lives of shelter pets.

We are grateful for this community and look forward to building on this momentum in the years ahead.

Thank you for helping us take another step forward for shelter pets.

🚨DO I LOOK FAMILIAR?🚨
We are full, and right now, reunions matter more than ever. 🐾
These pets were recently found in our community and are waiting for their families to come forward. Every pet reunited opens a kennel and gives another animal a chance. Please take a moment to look closely and share.
One post could be the reason they make it home.

❤️Reminder: These pets are currently lost and on a 72-
hour hold while we work to reunite them with their owners. They are not available for adoption at this time.
If you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is the time.
We have hundreds of adoptable pets ready to go home today. Choosing adoption immediately creates lifesaving space for the animals still coming through our doors.🐱🐶

🚨💔 MAX CAPACITY ALERT 💔🚨

Since Monday, our officers have responded to more than 240 calls for service, and tonight 198 dogs are in our care on-site, all waiting for the same thing: a chance.

One of them is KODA (A1257462).

Koda has been in our care for nearly 6 months. Recently, she had to return to the shelter through no fault of her own and found herself back in a kennel.

She's the kind of dog who wants to be as close to her people as physically possible. The kind who will happily spend hours cuddled up beside you, then spring to life for a game of fetch or tug-of-war. She's house-trained, cat-friendly, does well with dogs in a home environment, and has mastered the art of taking up an entire bed. ❤️

The shelter can give Koda food, medical care, toys, and treats.
What we can't give her is a loving home.

🐾 Foster

🤝 Rescue

Koda is just one of 198 dogs hoping tomorrow looks different than today. Help us create space and give dogs like Koda the fresh start they've been waiting for. 🤍🐾
