An out of towner took a minute to send in some kind words to recognize the efforts of seventeen year veteran Detective Mike Doan. Here’s what he had to say in part:

“I arrived in your city at the Charlotte airport recently and was met by an employee who pushed me in a wheelchair from the American Airlines gate to baggage claim. I later learned that $540.00, (my grocery money) was stolen from my satchel.

I filed a police report for the theft of my cash without much hope of the case even being assigned to anyone much less any hope of getting my cash back. However, my case was assigned to Det. Doan who was wonderful to work with. Not only did he identify the suspect who stole the money, but he recovered a good portion of it. I'm sorry that it took so long for me to write this, but I wanted Det. Doan to get the recognition he deserves. I work for the Springfield, MO Police Dept. and hope that our agency would treat tourists as well as Det. Doan treated me in Charlotte.”

Becoming a police officer was never part of Lt. Richard Nelson's plan. But September 11, 2001, changed everything.

After majoring in finance and business law at Virginia Tech, he was managing a bank branch and, while he enjoyed it, what he really wanted to do was serve his community.

He thought about his father, who had served his country for 24 years in the Army, and he made a career change. Now, a 16-year veteran of CMPD, Lt. Nelson works in the Metro Division serving the city of Charlotte. Make your own career change -> charlottepolicejobs.org

Officer Chandler McGill may look familiar, and that’s because not too long ago he was recognized by the Metrolina Trauma Advisory Committee for his swift actions that saved a life. One afternoon during his shift in the Providence Division, Officer McGill was sent to a call reporting someone had been stabbed. When he got to the scene, Officer McGill found the victim bleeding excessively from a very large knife-wound. His training kicked in and he immediately began working to apply a tourniquet on the victim, which we were told by the trauma doctor saved her life. A week later, Officer McGill received the Trauma STAR (Skilled and Talented Achievement Recognition).

A community member took time to send in some kind words about her experience with South Division Officer Stuart. Here’s what she had to say in part:⠀

“Officer Stuart was in the right place at the right time when my mother managed to lock herself out of her car in the Harris Teeter parking lot off of Park Road, when she left the keys in the trunk and closed it. She was apparently visibly upset and Officer Stuart took it upon himself to help her and to calm her down. When he called me, the first thing he said was that my Mom was OK, but that she had locked herself out of her car and was upset. I don't normally get calls from police officers so I was quite surprised and a little worried when he introduced himself as Officer Stuart.⠀

He was kind enough to not only stay with her and allow her to sit in the front seat of his car until I arrived, but he stayed with us until my sister was able to get into my Mom's house to get her spare key and then drive to the parking lot where we were waiting. By the time I got there, my Mom was calmer and could even chuckle about the fact that she was sitting in a cop car and people were staring, wondering what she might have done. Anyway, Officer Stuart went out of his way to help my Mom when she was obviously shaking and upset with herself, and he took the time to make sure we got there and were with her and able to get her home safely. And he was a nice person to boot and we enjoyed talking to him. (Mom had to brag about her daughters to him and he was kind enough to listen) I think he deserves a special thank you! We appreciate him for what he did for our Mom.”

In the late hours at the end of August, Officer Bryan Sokolofsky was patrolling the Freedom Division and sent to a call where a suspect had broken into a house through the front door and was threatening to harm someone inside. When Officer Sokolofsky got to the scene, he saw two dogs defending the home from the intruder. Officer Sokolofsky noticed the dogs were causing serious injuries to the suspect, so he risked his own safety by stepping in and fending off the dogs. He then immediately began assessing and tending to the suspect’s serious injuries, and the paramedics later informed us Officer Sokolofsky’s life-saving techniques likely saved the suspect’s life. #police #clt #charlottenc

Our Story

The goal of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is to make Charlotte one of the safest large cities in America. To do that, we continually advance strategies that prevent crime. We find ways to engage the community in taking steps that help minimize opportunities for victimization. We explore appropriate policy direction with the Mayor and City Council. We seek solutions to the complex community problems that contribute to crime and disorder. And we enforce the laws and arrest the people who break them.

The officers, staff and volunteers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department take very seriously their duty to provide citizens with professional, innovative and effective service. Community safety is a shared responsibility and we are committed to working in partnership with neighborhood residents and business owners as well as other local, state and federal agencies to reduce crime and increase safety.
