Aujia joined the team in September 2024, and we’re so grateful for the care, adaptability, and heart she brings to her work each day.

Get to know Aujia a little better:

🏠 What inspires you in your daily work?
The ability to help and how our help affects and changes the lives of the clients who actually want and appreciate it. Sometimes when we’re dropping off welcome bags, we get to see clients who are excited about their new homes and truly grateful to be in different situations; those moments really make my heart smile.

🏠 Favorite hobby?
I love performing private mini concerts at home with my toddler as my background dancer!

🏠 A skill you’d like to keep building?
Adaptability and the ability to pivot, along with critical thinking.

The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s Out of Reach 2026 report showed that 87% of extremely low-income renter households spend more than 30% of their income on housing, and 74% spend more than half of their income on housing.

The report offers a clear example: a family of four living at the federal poverty line would need to spend approximately 66% of its monthly income on a modest two-bedroom rental home. After rent, the family would have only $944 remaining for every other expense, less than the report’s estimated basic monthly food budget of $1,002.

After more than a month in his new home, we checked in with Bennett to see how he’s settling in and hear about his experience working with our team.

“I feel like it only took the team one day to find me a place, and it’s a place that I really like,” Bennett shared about working with Victoria. He also expressed how much he appreciated the Welcome Package and the support he received throughout the housing process.

We’re thrilled that Bennett has found a place he enjoys calling home. Wishing him continued comfort, stability and plenty of great days ahead!

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s Out of Reach 2026 report, the average Fair Market Rent for a two-bedroom home in North Carolina is $1,410 per month.

Based on the average renter wage in the state, a renter can afford approximately $1,157 per month without spending more than 30% of their income on housing. That creates an average gap of $253 every month, or more than $3,000 per year.

For many households, that difference must come from money needed for groceries, transportation, childcare, healthcare and other essentials.

A month into her new home, Daniella shared an update with us about how things are going and the support she received throughout the housing process.

“Working with Te’ana was great; she was very fast and responsive,” she said. “She was always available to answer my questions and I really liked working with her.”

It’s wonderful to know Daniella had a positive experience and is settling into her new place. We’re wishing her all the best in this next chapter!

This month, we’re celebrating our Director of Development, Taylor Kay Birkrem for two years of service on our team!

Taylor joined Housing Collab in 2024, drawn to our mission and its connection to her belief that affordable housing should be available for all. That belief shapes the way she approaches her work each day.

“Knowing that everyday I wake up and do this job is the day that could change someone else’s life for the better is so powerful. I love what we do,” she shared.

Outside of work, Taylor is a self-described book nerd and travel-bug. Her favorite book is *Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse*, thanks to happy memories of her mom reading it to her, and one of her favorite travel experiences was spending time teaching English in Madagascar. Closer to home, Freedom Park holds a special place for her family as it was the spot where they realized they wanted to move to Charlotte a few years ago!

Thank you, Taylor, for two years of dedication, compassion, and commitment to helping make housing more accessible in our community. We’re grateful to have you on our team!

We checked in with Walker, a veteran from The Surge, after he moved into his new home with support from Elondra and our team. Before his housing placement, Walker had been staying at Roof Above for about a month.

Walker shared that he “loves his new place” and is grateful for the support he received along the way. He thanked Elondra for all of her hard work and said he was “happy that he has his own place again.”

We’re happy to see Walker back in a place of his own and beginning this new chapter. Sending him our very best as he settles in and makes the space his home! 💚

The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s Out of Reach 2026 report found that it would take approximately 3.7 full-time minimum-wage jobs to afford a modest two-bedroom rental home in North Carolina.

That’s equivalent to nearly 148 working hours every week.

A household shouldn’t need several full-time incomes simply to keep housing costs manageable, yet for many North Carolinians, rent is far beyond what one low-wage job can support.

We recently caught up with Liliana to hear how she’s settling into her new home and what her experience has been like so far.

“I am trying to get my new place decorated. I really like where I am. I have to get some furniture in here, but other than that, all is well. Ivey was a good person to work with! She was very helpful. I really appreciate you all,” she shared.

We’re so glad to hear Liliana is enjoying her new space and beginning to make it feel like home. Wishing her plenty of happy moments as she continues getting settled!

We had the opportunity to visit Iris in her new space and talk to her about her experience with our team.

“My daughter and I think Te’ana is an earth angel!” she said. “She really is a great person. We worked together for over six months because of some things falling through, but she hung in there with me and found us a great, safe location.”

“She knew how important it was to us to have a safe place to call home, and she found the perfect spot.”

We’re delighted to know that Iris and her daughter are settling into their new home and making it theirs. Sending you great vibes as you all continue this journey!
