“Our Focus”

Colossians 3:1-2
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Distractions…our lives are full of distractions! There are so many things to cause us to lose focus on the things that are truly important… God, family, service.
Now, not everything that distracts us is bad, but when these things consume us, then that is when we need to reevaluate our focus.

Emergency services has its own list of things that consume our minds…work schedules, salaries, even our side jobs. Now like I said, these aren’t bad conversations to have, but when it’s all we talk about…when it becomes more important than our actual service that we are called to do, then these conversations become distractions as well.

We see in today’s verses that if we are raised in Christ, if we are believers in the gospel, if we have been saved from our sins, if we are children of God…then we should be about His business and focus on His Will for our lives! We aren’t to be distracted or hung up in the details of this world, but rather the service that He has led us to and the opportunities He gives us.
So what does this look like? I believe it looks like us focusing on growing and training to better ourselves to serve our communities for Him!

This week, my prayer is for our focus be more on God and our service than ourselves. May He bless us and our families with His protection!

And may my service to you, be enough to better meet your needs!

Serving You For Him,
Chaplain Jason

At the June 8, 2026, Board of Aldermen Meeting, Fire Chief James Brinkley had the honor of recognizing several members of the Long View Fire Department for their extraordinary service and commitment to saving lives.

Captain A. Smith, Firefighter KC Gregory, Engineer M. Bondurant, and Firefighter J. Brown were each presented with the Lifesaving Award for their response to a medical emergency involving a one-year-old child in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, the crew immediately initiated CPR and assisted with the child's transport to the hospital. Thanks to their swift actions, professionalism, and dedication, the incident resulted in a positive outcome.

Chief Brinkley also took a moment to recognize a very personal event within the fire department family. He recalled the day he received notification that Long View Firefighter Wright had suffered cardiac arrest. Responding to the scene alongside Lieutenant McCarraher, Chief Brinkley shared how impressed he was by the calm, professionalism, and dedication demonstrated by the firefighters already on scene.

"We had one of our members having a medical emergency and two of our members who had responded, exemplifying everything that a fire department stands for in its mission. Everything was just so calm and professional on that scene," Chief Brinkley stated.

Chief Brinkley then recognized Engineer G. Newton and Lieutenant J. Lakey for their lifesaving actions. In a touching moment, Firefighter Wright was given the honor of presenting each of them with their Lifesaving Awards.

We are incredibly proud of these firefighters and grateful for their commitment to serving others, both in our community and within their own fire department family. Please join us in congratulating these dedicated public servants on this well-deserved recognition.
