JUSTICE FOR COLLEEN COATES! 🕊️

On Sep 17, Colleen Coates, a 55-year old cabin cleaner, collapsed from heat reaching as high as 94°F. She was recently hospitalized and had known health issues, but was still forced to work. Colleen’s death is the direct result of a system that prioritizes profit over human life, and refuses to treat workers with the dignity they deserve.

No worker should ever be killed on the job, or have to risk their health to make ends meet. We uplift the demands of SEIU 32BJ for all airport workers to have fair pay, affordable healthcare, and stronger workplace protections—such as the right to call out when sick. We must carry on Colleen's spirit and organize for a world where all workers are treated with respect.

On Monday, Charlotte City Council voted to approve the I-77 expansion, a $4.3 billion project to build toll lanes that will displace residents and pollute historically Black neighborhoods on the west side.

For months, residents have fought against the project and, in May, successfully pressured the City to halt the expansion. However, following pressure from real estate and big business, Joi Mayo and Malcolm Graham—two City Councilors representing West Charlotte—sold out their own constituents and flipped their votes.

This is yet another example of how our system time and time again chooses to serve the interests of wealthy corporations and not the people impacted. We need a new system, where people have a real say in what is built in our communities, and where our resources are used on public transportation—not more highway lanes.

Two protestors were recently convicted on federal misdemeanors for protesting ICE and Border Patrol during "Operation Charlotte’s Web".

This is a blatant attack on free speech, and another attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate left and progressive forces.

But we can’t let this administration scare us. We saw the power we had in Charlotte when we fought back against Border Patrol last year—that's exactly why protestors are being targeted now. We must continue organizing and fighting back against Trump’s racist billionaire agenda.

🚨 CMPD recently filed a “Request for Proposal”, a formal bid for companies like Flock and Axon to upgrade the city’s existing license plate readers (LPRs) with a “new, state-of-the-art solution”.

This mass surveillance technology is already being used to erode privacy, target vulnerable communities, and assist ICE's terror. All across the nation communities are organizing and winning against LPRs, with more than 100 differently municipalities canceling their contracts with companies like Flock or deactivating the cameras.

We can do the same here. On Sept 29, Flock executives are visiting Charlotte to try to sell their surveillance tech to our city. Join the community to protest them and fight back against AI mass surveillance!

10 years ago today, Keith Lamont Scott was killed by CMPD as he was waiting in his apartment's parking lot. The officer who murdered him was never charged, despite video evidence showing Scott never posed a threat.

His killing sparked a mass rebellion in Charlotte that shook the city for days. A decade later, police continue to kill with impunity. On Friday, after this video was recorded, CMPD killed yet another Black father, Curtis Massey.

We must continue to organize. Tonight, there will be a rally and vigil demanding justice for Keith Lamont Scott, Curtis Massey, and all victims of police brutality.

🚨EMERGENCY VIGIL: JUSTICE FOR CURTIS MASSEY!

Yesterday, Charlotte police shot and killed Curtis Massey, a 47-year old Black father. They claimed he was armed and a threat, but witnesses and his family say that’s a lie. They say he was shot in the back while running away, and never touched the gun in his waistband.

This murder comes 10 years after Keith Lamont Scott was murdered by CMPD. Then, as now, the police lied about Scott posing a threat to justify his murder. We say: ENOUGH!

The community is holding a vigil and protest tonight. Come out to demand JUSTICE FOR CURTIS MASSEY!

🚨 After months of lobbying by real estate and big business, two City Councilors representing West Charlotte are set to vote in favor of the I-77 expansion—a $4.3 billion project to build toll lanes that will displace residents and pollute historically Black neighborhoods on the west side. Councilors Joi Mayo and Malcolm Graham both initially voted against the project in May, temporarily halting it.

For months, residents impacted by the expansion having organized to fight back, packing city meetings and signing petitions. Join us to pack Monday's City Council meeting and demand Joi Mayo and Malcolm Graham listen to their community—not big business!
