TODAY at The Center! Did you know that the same steps you take to support a healthy cardiovascular system can also reduce your dementia risk?

George Worthington from the Virginia Division for Aging Services has a free presentation at 11:00 am on the link between heart health and brain health.

Reserve your seat at thecentercville.org.

In this session, you will learn how the same steps that protect your heart—like staying active, eating well, and managing blood pressure—also help lower the risk of dementia

DELAYED OPENING: The Center will open at 10:00 am today, Friday, January 30.

If you are coming for a specific program, please check thecentercville.org or My Active Center to make sure it is still happening.

Exercise extreme caution driving and walking in the parking lot! Some icy patches may remain and plowing often blocks sidewalk access.

Experts recommend the "penguin walk" for slippery surfaces:
* Bend your knees slightly and walk flat footed with toes pointing out
* Keep your center of gravity over your feet as much as possible
* Take shorter, shuffle-like steps
* Keep your arms extended out for balance
* Move slowly to react to changes in grip

Be safe and we hope to see you soon!

Got cabin fever? We feel you.

The Center will (again) be closed on Thursday, January 29.

Why is it taking so long? Because our parking lot is not yet safe to navigate.

Temperatures staying so low throughout the week has made clearing all the ice a challenge. We want to assure you that we are actively working on solutions to help us open as soon as possible.

In the meantime, other members of our team are busy behind the scenes planning programs, writing grants, producing newsletters, and more in support of our healthy aging mission.

Thank you for your patience and we hope to see you soon!

In 2021, Samuel (“Sam”) Simon was diagnosed with early-stage Alzheimer’s. Despite the enormous challenges of this diagnosis, Sam has become “Dementia Man,” a powerful advocate through theater, using his own experience as inspiration to reshape the narrative surrounding cognitive decline. With his newest play Dementia Man, An Existential Journey, he defies stereotypes and inspires audiences.

In this full-length theatrical piece, Sam takes the stage as a man facing his cognitive decline and asks the hard questions of what to do next in the face of what he calls “an existential journey.” It is a peek into the head and heart of the struggle with a broken medical system and a personal and family challenge. The play challenges the audience to imagine a meaningful future for the millions of people with neurocognitive disease, with accommodation and adaptation.

Free and open to all | Tuesday, February 3, 2:00-3:30 pm

You can DOUBLE the impact of your gift to The Center... but only for a few more hours!

Our Year-End Matching Challenge ends tonight with the close of 2025.

Until midnight, an anonymous donor will match every contribution dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000—our biggest matching challenge ever!

With no ongoing support from federal, state, or local governments, The Center relies on these gifts to provide healthy aging resources to our community.

It is the generosity of people like you that creates our 150+ weekly opportunities to move your body, learn new things, and forge the critical social bonds that support both physical and mental health and well-being.

You can learn more about all we do and make your contribution at thecentercville.org.
