A little over a year ago, the Pantops Fire Rescue volunteers staffed Albemarle County Fire Rescue's (ACFR) first ambulance staffed exclusively by its volunteers. With only four members at the time, this was a huge accomplishment - one that we're very proud of. Today, we boast a roster of 24 active volunteers, and are excited to be celebrating another first - both for our team and for ACFR. Tonight, our volunteers will be staffing ACFR's first, all-volunteer ambulance providing Advanced Life Support (ALS). Up until tonight, we've leaned on our partners at the Charlottesville - Albemarle Rescue Squad to assist with providing ALS care when needed, and are grateful for their support. We're also thankful for the community's continued support of our volunteers, and are looking forward to serving for many more years to come.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics tell us that fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outside and other fires. These fires caused an average of three deaths, 40 civilian injuries, and an average of $43 million in direct property damage.

Celebrate the safely this year, with these safety tips from our friends at U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:

-Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
-Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
-Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities.
Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
-Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
-Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
-Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
-Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
-Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
-Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
-After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
-Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Today marks a momentous achievement for our members and the community! Starting this morning at 6AM, our ambulance will be staffed and available for calls for 60 consecutive hours! While, to some, this may not seem to be such a notable achievement. Many of our fire and rescue partners throughout the area provide this level of service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and have been doing do for many years. Without the encouragement and support of these partners, we wouldn't be as successful as we are today. And for that, we're thankful. But for us, as Albemarle County Fire Rescue's newest, combination fire and rescue station, we view this accomplishment as a testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our career and volunteer staff, working together, to meet a common goal - to provide high quality, professional, and compassionate emergency medical care to residents, patrons, and visitors of eastern Albemarle County.

In the coming months, our volunteers will continue to train and demonstrate competency in their skills so that we can continue to provide this level of service, and more! If you, or someone you know, may be interested in joining our team and serving your community please let us know! You can message us here, or email us at [email protected].

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

We wanted to take a minute to thank our law enforcement partners at the Albemarle County Police Department, Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office, Charlottesville Police Department, Charlottesville Sheriff's Office, University of Virginia Police Department, and Virginia State Police for the selfless dedication their teams exhibit each and every day to make our community such a great place to live, work, and play. Blessed are the peacemakers.

Yesterday evening, in preparation for National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) on April 16th, our volunteers were invited to speak to residents at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge about Advanced Medical Directives and End of Life Care options.

National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) exists to inspire, educate and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. NHDD is an initiative to encourage patients to express their wishes regarding healthcare and for providers and facilities to respect those wishes, whatever they may be.

For more information about NHDD, visit their website at www.nhdd.org.

Our volunteers spend a lot of time away from home. Countless hours spent training to hone our skills, in meetings to stay current and informed, and on duty to protect our beautiful community. Opportunities like this - to have our families join us for a warm meal - are precious and we’re grateful for their support.

Interested in having a seat at our table? Let us know! We’d love you meet you, and share more about how you can serve your community as a Pantops volunteer.
