We want to take a moment to recognize the incredible efforts of our crews, who worked tirelessly to locate, contain, and extinguish the Morven fire. Their dedication, alongside the hard work of the other career and volunteer firefighters who responded, was instrumental in bringing the situation under control. We’re grateful for their commitment to protecting the community and for the strong partnerships that make responses like this possible!

🔥 WILDFIRE UPDATE 🚨

Yesterday and today, DOF and partner responders contained 17 wildfires, including the 2,875-acre Big Glow Fire in Lee and Scott counties and the 200-acre Morven Fire in Albemarle County. Smoke may continue from contained fires while crews complete mop-up and control (extinguishing) of fires.

Containment efforts continue on the Brush Mountain Fire, which has burned just over 482 acres in Roanoke County and is 20% contained.

Critical wildfire conditions continue today ⚠️ Help responders by avoiding areas where they are working, not flying drones anywhere near fires, and postponing all outdoor burning. 🔥🚫 Most of the recent wildfires were caused by people starting outdoor fires that escaped.

A look back at a typical weekend shift, where we check dry hydrants to make sure they’re operational, a necessary water source for fire operations in areas without traditional hydrants.

🚒 New Tool Alert! 🚒

We're excited to announce that we've added one of the first nozzles in the County specifically designed for combating electric vehicle (EV) fires. This multipurpose tool is used to cool and control lithium-ion fires during EV emergencies, but can also be used for decontamination, extinguishing attic and crawl space fires, and more!

This new equipment strengthens our ability to handle EV-related emergencies safely and efficiently, complementing our other tools like the fire blanket and EV plug. As technology evolves, so do the challenges we face—and we're committed to staying prepared.

A huge thanks to our amazing community for your continued support—because of you, we’re able to keep pushing forward with initiatives like this to keep everyone safe! 🙌

Your personal vehicle is most likely not a submarine, so don’t even think about driving it through flood waters. Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. To put it simply — Turn Around, Don’t Drown! 🚙🌊

Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.

Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water.

Determine how best to protect yourself based on the type of flooding.
