** Information Release **

At approximately 9:50 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2026, the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) and Albemarle County Fire Rescue (ACFR) were dispatched to the South Fork Rivanna River Reservoir after a concerned citizen reported seeing evidence that an individual may have fallen into the water.

First responders immediately began search operations along the river and deployed drones in the immediate area. Following more than three hours of water operations, crews paused the search around 1 a.m. due to limited visibility in the overnight hours. The search resumed at daylight on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Evidence at the scene led first responders to identify the specific missing person. At approximately 10:30 a.m., search crews located a deceased individual in the water, believed to be the missing individual. The body will be transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond for positive identification. The preliminary investigation does not show signs of foul play.

ACPD would like to thank Albemarle County Fire Rescue and Virginia State Police for their swift response and assistance in the water operations.
