High school seniors participated in our Senior Saturday Celebration at the Center for Community Partnerships in downtown Charlottesville. Participants had the chance to reflect on their activities, accomplishments, and support systems throughout their high school careers and were encouraged to think about their post-graduation plans. The event included a scavenger hunt on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall and ended with lunch and a raffle where students won prizes. Wishing a well-earned CONGRATULATIONS to all of our senior students! 🎓💛

On April 22, the IRC in Charlottesville was privileged to be recognized once again by the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run for our commitment to helping our community become a home for all people.

The IRC was represented at this year’s Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run ceremony by Cecilia Lapp Stoltzfus, IRC Virginia’s Food & Agriculture Program Manager. Cecilia was joined by her colleague and clients who participate in the New Roots agricultural program in Charlottesville.

The Peace Run “is a global torch relay that offers everyone in the world a chance to express their longing for peace…since its founding in 1987, the Run has visited almost every country on earth – over 150 nations and territories – and touched the lives of millions of people.”

Our team was thrilled to participate in Westminster-Canterbury's first ever Non-Profit Fair. We enjoyed connecting with both residents and other area non-profits and community partners. The event was a great success with over 200 participants engaging with the work of our work and other non-profits in our area. Thank you to Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge for being such a wonderful host!

We are currently seeking donations of new or gently-used cell phones and laptops. The IRC works alongside refugees and newcomers in the Charlottesville community. By providing families with cell phones and laptops, we can offer a critical resource that may be beyond their budget.

We asked that used laptops are less than five years old and restored to factory settings. For donated cell phones, they can be restored to factory settings or unlocked and provide the phone's carrier. Our staff is available to support donors with resetting devices to factory settings. If you are interested in donating or have any questions, email Elizabeth Helmke at [email protected].

Its National Volunteer Week, and we are excited to introduce you to our outstanding volunteer, Neal! 🖤💛

Neal has devoted a tremendous amount of time to our medical transportation program over the past year. During one of the more time-consuming medical transports, Neal recognized how long of a day it was for the client and took him to lunch. This level on compassion and diligence is consistent with his volunteering: he is learning to speak Persian, has played catered music on car rides, and has been responsive to clients' needs.

Outside of the IRC, Neal enjoys boxing and pickleball. Through his experiences, Neal has recognized the ability to adapt through cultural and language barriers while also ensuring ease in the American medical process for refugee clients.

Its National Volunteer Week, and we are thrilled to highlight some of our volunteers - meet Drene! We are incredibly grateful to have Drene as part of out volunteer team and deeply appreciate the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness she brings to the IRC community. 🖤💛

Drene was a teacher for over 30 years and then worked part-time with our community partner, Alliance for Interfaith Ministries, for 10 years. She currently volunteers at Greer Elementary School and sings in both the Oratorio Society and church choir at Meadows Presbyterian.

Outside of the IRC, Drene loves to spend her time reading, traveling, sewing, knitting, and hiking. She has a husband, three kids, eight grandchildren, and two cats who keep life busy!
