Foothills Children's Advocacy Center

Foothills Children's Advocacy Center Foothills is a one-stop child-friendly facility for children and families to help reduce trauma and begin healing.

We walk alongside children and their families to promote healing when there are concerns of sexual abuse, severe physical abuse, human trafficking, or those who have witnessed violence. When a report of abuse or victimization is submitted to Law Enforcement or the Department of Social Services, they schedule an appointment for the child with a Forensic Interviewer at Foothills CAC. Children also r

eceive forensic medical exams and mental health counseling at Foothills, where Family Advocates assist caregivers.

A few weeks ago, our Family Advocate Araceli had the opportunity to visit the team at Mountain Top Therapy Group and learn more about the work they’re doing with children and families in our community.

Mountain Top uses approaches including Play Therapy, Child-Parent Relationship Therapy, and Group Therapy to help children communicate, build skills, strengthen relationships, and work through difficult experiences. As Araceli got to see, that can involve everything from a room full of toys and imaginative play to role-playing games that help young people practice social skills.

We’re grateful to have professionals in our community finding creative, child-centered ways to support children and families, and we always value opportunities to learn more about the resources available to the families we serve.

Thank you to the Mountain Top team for welcoming Araceli and sharing a little of your work with us!

This week, CT (our Director of Multi-Disciplinary Team Services) is heading to Fort Polk, Louisiana, where she’ll be training with Justice 3D on trauma-responsive sexual assault investigations involving adults and children.

CT brings deep expertise in trauma-informed interviewing, evidence collection, and understanding how trauma can affect memory, behavior, and disclosure. It’s knowledge she brings to our MDT partners every day, helping strengthen the way professionals across our community work together on behalf of children and families.

We love seeing CT take that expertise beyond our community, sharing what she knows and helping strengthen trauma-responsive practices for survivors and families everywhere.

We’re so proud to have her representing Foothills this week! 💙

What does an actual visit to Foothills look like for a child?

Every child's experience is unique, but here's a general look at what many children can expect during their visit.

💙 Arrive and get settled with books, games, toys, snacks, and a welcoming space.

💙 Meet the forensic interviewer and spend time with the Family Advocate before the interview begins.

💙 Meet with the forensic interviewer in a child-friendly room. Children are shown the cameras and told the interview is being recorded. Some children may also receive a medical exam from our child abuse-trained medical team once the forensic interview is complete.

💙 Return to the lobby to play, relax, or get some snacks with the Family Advocate after the interview.

💙 Finally, the family receives information, support, and resources to help them navigate what comes next.

From the waiting room to the interview room, every space at Foothills is designed with children in mind. Our hope is that every child feels welcomed, respected, and listened to, knowing they're surrounded by caring adults every step of the way.

There are afternoons that stay with you long after they're over.

After a morning of learning and team building last Monday, our staff spent the afternoon creating beautiful bouquets with the wonderful team at blooms4good and Eastwood Farm and Winery.

What makes this partnership so special is the impact it has on our community. Blooms4good continues to donate every flower penny raised to local nonprofit partners, and Eastwood Farm and Winery continues to support nonprofit organizations that are working to make our community stronger.

One thing we especially appreciated is that all three organizations are women-led! Shout out to all the fierce and fantastic women in our community working to create a better world. Featured here from blooms4good to help us make our bouquets pop are Kira and Morgan.

Thank you to blooms4good and Eastwood Farm and Winery for a beautiful afternoon of creativity!

Telling the stories of the children and families we serve isn't easy. These stories are difficult to hear, and they must be shared in ways that honor each family's privacy while helping our community better understand the need for this work.

On Monday, our team spent time exploring how to do just that with guidance from Cindy Fellows October Grace Media. We are grateful to Children's Advocacy Centers of Virginia for providing this training and support to children's advocacy centers across the Commonwealth.

Thank you, October Grace Media and Children's Advocacy Centers of Virginia, for investing in our team. More to come on our blossom-filled afternoon with Blooms for Good at Eastwood Farm and Winery this Friday!

These stories matter. When they're told with care, compassion, and integrity, they build awareness, inspire action, and help more children and families connect with the support they need.

As children grow, so does their world.

Knowing who they’re with, where they are and when they’ll be home isn’t about hovering. It’s about staying connected and creating a circle of safety around them.

We are so happy to partner with the National Children's Alliance on the campaign, because keeping children safe is everyone’s business.
