We had a great day at our all-staff training last Friday. Staff enjoyed engaging presentations on open-door communication and decision-making, a fun raffle, and a group project about how every role at JABA plays an important part in supporting our mission to help older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers. We ended the day with a roundtable discussion with Delegate Katrina Callsen for Delegate on upcoming General Assembly budgets and policies to keep us informed!

Caregivers who support veterans - or veterans who now care for civilian loved ones - may face additional barriers to providing care and receiving support:

- Invisible Injuries (like PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, etc.) can make caring for loved ones more complex. Treatments and symptoms for health concerns can greatly impact these invisible conditions, creating complex care needs.
- Navigating bureaucracy or complex benefits systems can pose challenges for families trying to get support.
- Caregivers' health often worsens when caring for others. 43% of post-9/11 caregivers of veterans report depression.
- Cost of care can be a large barrier to overcome. Caregivers of veterans lose over $13,000 annually in income due to care costs and lost household income (American Journal of Managed Care, 2024).

At JABA, we understand the unique challenges that you or a loved one may be navigating. Respite care for veterans may be reimbursed through the VA at our Respite & Enrichment Center. And JABA provides Caregiver Support for education, peer support groups, and benefits navigation/options counseling.

Your determination is admirable. And we are determined that you don't need to walk this journey alone. Learn more: https://www.jabacares.org/caregiver-support

In 1776, Virginia stood at the forefront of history, playing a pivotal role in America’s independence. Today, Virginia is once again making history. For the first time in 250 years, Virginia is on the cusp of having an age 60+ population that will be the largest population segment in the state. It will be greater than the 18-and-below population and everything in between.

With this aging population growth, comes an increasing need for support, connection, and compassionate care. Your contribution helps ensure that older adults in our communities are not just cared for, but truly valued.

Increase the quality and length of your life by defying ageism every day.

It is believed that the last Monday in May was first chosen for Memorial Day because flowers would be in bloom all across the nation. These flowers would be used to decorate the graves and memorials of individuals who lost their lives in the service of their country. We honor and thank these brave men and women. Thank you to all our military families for your sacrifice, bravery, and courage. Today, we hold space for grief as we remember lives lost.

Sharon loved living with her grandson, who was her primary caregiver. But he was struggling to care for her. Sharon’s health was declining, and she was afraid to leave home to see a doctor. When they reached out for help, Sharon was scared that JABA’s Aging Services Coordinator would try to send her to a nursing home. The ASC assured both Sharon and her grandson that JABA was there to help them reach their goals. Because of Sharon’s mobility issues and income limitations, she struggled to get enough nutrition, despite her grandson’s best efforts. The ASC helped Sharon sign up for Home Delivered Meals and supported her grandson with access to community resources like the Department of Social Services, SNAP, and medical equipment providers. Sharon was thrilled to have the support she and her grandson needed, without having to leave her home.
