Heads up, Charlottesville! City offices will be closed Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) will operate as normally scheduled.

There will be no residential curbside trash or recycling collection on Monday. Service will resume on Tuesday, September 8, one day behind, and the sliding schedule will complete on Saturday, September 12.

The uptown and downtown business route will be provided one collection for trash and recycling on Monday beginning at 7:00 AM.

Calling all runners! 🏃🏽‍♀️There are two distance options at the again this year: 10 or 20 miles. Join fellow community members on an all-paces run around the city on the Rivanna Trail Sunday, Sept. 27.

8 a.m. - Run the Loop (20 miles, all paces)
10 a.m. - Run the HALF Loop (10 miles, all paces)

Arrive early and bring your broken-in running shoes, water, and a good attitude! There will also be 7 Cheer Zone aid stations around the loop.

The Charlottesville Police Department (CPD) is working alongside the Fire Marshal’s Office to investigate a suspected arson related to the fire that occurred late last night along the Rivanna River in the area of the former encampment near Free Bridge.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help identifying the individual shown in the accompanying video.

Do you recognize this person? If you have information that may assist with this investigation, please contact Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.

The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

The Charlottesville Fire Department, along with its public safety partners, responded to a fire late last night along the Rivanna River in the area of the former encampment near Free Bridge.

The fire was extinguished, and there is no threat to public safety.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Charlottesville Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.

Rivanna Riverfront Transition Update

The City of Charlottesville thanks the community members, partners, staff, and others who supported the transition from the Rivanna Riverfront encampment over the past two days and treated residents with respect, dignity, and space throughout the process.

As of today, there is no one remaining in the encampment, and 26 people have completed intake at the emergency shelter at 2000 Holiday Drive.

Cleanup of the former encampment area is underway as the City works to restore the area for recreational use. The Rivanna Trail is open, but trail users are asked to remain mindful of City contractors working in the area as cleanup continues over the coming days.

A portion of the Rivanna Trail closure will continue today, September 2, starting at 8:00 AM. People are strongly encouraged to avoid this section of the trail while City staff and contractors continue cleanup and other work in the area.

An update will be provided when work in the area is complete.
