On this Memorial Day, we honor the men and women of the armed services who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and the Special Immigrant Visa holders (SIVs) who supported many of them in Iraq and Afghanistan at their own peril. We remember the sacrifice.

For 10 years, we have come alongside newcomers in all their “firsts.” 🫶

Firsts can be exhilarating and overwhelming for anyone starting over. Newcomers of all ages know the feeling well—first time on an airplane, first experiences using modern conveniences like dishwashers, thermostats and showers, first time at a grocery store, first bus route in a new city, first online school registration, first camp experience, first time swimming in a pool, first doctor’s appointment at UVA hospital, first day at a new job. The list goes on and on.

International Neighbors—and our team of amazing volunteers—is there every step of the way to help refugees and SIVs navigate all their firsts with dignity, support and celebration.

Middle schoolers Charlotte and Sophia led a letter writing campaign at their school creating notes of welcome for our Outreach Team to deliver. More than 50 letters were written with recommendations of favorite places to visit in Charlottesville and encouragement for a new life here. Thank you, Village School!

Though the Refugee Admissions Program has been suspended since January 2025, our Welcome Team continues to meet and offer support to newcomers in their first five years of living in Charlottesville. We assess their needs, connect them to resources in the Cville community, and offer them an opportunity to be matched with a Great Neighbor Guide. Want to support this work? Make a gift to our Hello, Firsts campaign by May 31st! Your donation will be fully matched by another Great Neighbor! 🎉

When you make a gift in any amount to the Hello, Firsts! campaign, you support a summer full of connection and belonging. Wondering how your dollars might be used?

- $20 pays for a basic set of flash cards for newcomers to use as they learn English from one of our in-home volunteer tutors;

- $35 pays for day camp supplies (towels, sunscreen, water bottles) to keep newcomer children safe and having fun in the sun!

- $60 pays for a trip to the Metro Richmond Zoo on World Refugee Day for newcomers and their Great Neighbor Guides;

- $100 pays for 10 books for a summer book club with newcomers and Great Neighbors;

- $150 pays for 2 hours of professional driving lessons for women who aspire to receive a Virginia driver’s license.

Make a gift to the Hello, Firsts! campaign before May 31st and have your gift fully matched! Let’s kick off a summer to remember for our refugee and SIV neighbors. Link in bio.

Be willing to go first. Reach out to the newcomer in your neighborhood. Invite them into your world. Pull out your translator app to help overcome the language barrier. Share community resources you know about. Find connections that are universal across all cultures. A hug. A smile. A similar parenting struggle. Go first.

Donations to the Hello, Firsts! campaign are fully matched up to $25,000 until May 31st. Make your gift today!

Newcomer families who haven’t received a green card because of a severe backlog in processing and now a pause in applications, did not receive SNAP benefits this month. In September, they will no longer receive Medicaid. This is detrimental to refugee families who have done everything right and on time and are still losing basic benefits because of a gap in the system. Read on to find out how you can help, and please share with those you know.
