The fall agricultural, marine and greenhouse plastic recycling collection period runs September 1 through November 2.

Important location change: Due to road construction, the drop-off site has moved from the Carver County Public Works location to the City of Cologne Public Works & Recycling Site, 304 Louis St. W., Cologne. The two locations are just down the road from each other.

Thanks to a partnership between Carver County Environmental Services, Revolution Plastics and the UMN Extension, local farmers and businesses have recycled more than 139,000 pounds of agricultural, marine and greenhouse plastics since the program began.

DON’T DO THIS: Cut a lithium-ion battery in half

This battery was brought to the Environmental Center after someone cut it in half.

They were lucky. Cutting into lithium-ion batteries can cause the cells to react, catch fire or go into thermal runaway.

Don’t cut, crush or puncture batteries. Never put them in the trash or recycling.

The Environmental Center accepts lithium-ion batteries up to 500 watt-hours. Larger batteries should be returned to the manufacturer or taken to another program that accepts them.

About 30% of Carver County’s 48,000 homes were built before 1980. As these homes are remodeled or torn down, they create a huge amount of leftover building materials.

To keep usable items out of the landfill, Carver County has launched a Building Material Reuse Program in partnership with Home Again Furnishings and Nordic Waste , with support from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Here’s how you can get involved:

The ReClaim-It Store – Located inside Home Again Furnishings in Waconia. Shop or donate salvaged building materials and watch for free material swaps held four times a year.

Drop-Off Site in Norwood Young America – In partnership with Nordic Waste. Residents can drop off or pick up usable building materials for free. More sites are planned for 2026!

Deconstruction & Reuse Grants – Planning a remodel? You may qualify for a micro-grant to help carefully remove materials (deconstruction) or purchase reclaimed items.

Just because it’s blue doesn’t mean it belongs in your recycling bin.

We know...it’s frustrating for us too. Despite being sold as “recycling bags,” plastic bags should NOT go in your curbside recycling. Recyclables should go in your cart loose, no bags needed!

Clean, dry plastic bags and film can be recycled separately at participating drop-off locations. Including the Environmental Center and other recycling sites in Carver County.

Misleading product descriptions and recycling claims can make recycling more confusing than it needs to be. If you ever have a question about what goes where, we’re here to help!

Do you live in or manage an apartment building, townhouse community, or condominium association? Carver County Environmental Services is now offering grants of up to $5,000 to help improve recycling opportunities for residents.

Funding can be used for projects such as:
• Recycling containers
• Hauling service
• Signs and labels
• Resident education and outreach
• Improving recycling collection areas
• Pilot programs and more

These grants are designed to make recycling easier and more accessible for people living in multifamily housing. Projects that expand organics recycling are also encouraged through funding provided by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Are you a resident who wants better recycling where you live? Talk with your property manager or homeowners' association about applying. Resident groups are also eligible, and Carver County Environmental Services can help you get started.

When dropping off materials at the Environmental Center, please keep everything separated and clearly visible — especially sharps, needles, syringes, or lancets.

The Environmental Center does accept sharps, but they must be:
-Placed in a closed, labeled, approved sharps container
-Declared to staff upon arrival
-Never mixed with other items or hidden in bags

Important: Staff do not handle sharps. Residents are required to place their properly contained sharps directly into the designated bin.

Please do not place sharps loosely in the trash or recycling. This puts workers at serious risk and can contaminate materials.

If you choose to dispose of sharps at home:

Use a puncture-proof container (e.g., a thick plastic detergent bottle), make sure it closes securely and clearly label it “SHARPS”

Place it in the trash only, never in recycling

Need a container? We offer free 1-quart sharps containers upon request — just ask!

Curious about invasive species? Ever wonder what happens at the Environmental Center? Want to know the best way to dispose of something? Attend the Environmental Academy, an opportunity for Chanhassen and Carver County residents to learn more about the environment around them.

This year's classes include Invasive Species and Wood Waste Management (Sept. 10), a Big Woods Hike at Camp Fire (Sept. 17), Household Hazardous Waste and Environmental Center Tour (Sept. 24), Understanding the Recycling Process (Oct. 8), Organics Recycling and Facility Tour (Oct. 22) and Building Material Reuse and ReclaimIT (Nov. 12).

Offered in partnership with the Chanhassen, Environmental Commission.

Plastic Free Friday: Look for household and personal care products that don’t come in plastic bottles at all, such as bar soap, shampoo bars, or powdered cleaners. For products that do come in liquid form, look for refill options so you can reuse the container you already have.

Why it matters: Choosing plastic-free products or refilling a container you already own can reduce the amount of single-use plastic you bring home.
