Exciting progress in Rushmore!

A major step forward for local childcare arrived this week as the new prefabricated duplex was set in place. The duplex will provide space for two childcare providers, helping expand access to quality childcare for families throughout Rushmore and the surrounding area. Thank you to the many partners, community leaders, and supporters who helped make this project possible.

Well deserved recognition also goes to CEDA's Angie Kopplow and Jim Langborg, whose leadership, persistence, and ability to bring partners together helped move this project from concept to reality. Their dedication has been instrumental in creating new childcare opportunities for families in Nobles County.

Last evening, we gathered to celebrate a major milestone: CEDA's 40th Anniversary! It was an unforgettable evening filled with reflection, connection and great gratitude for the incredible communities we serve in Northern Minnesota.

For four decades, CEDA has been dedicated to helping small communities do BIG things. Our work across Northern Minnesota has grown into a powerful testament to the strength and greatness of rural America.

Thank you to all of our regional partners, community members, and community leaders who joined us for this event. If you missed us, ensure you attend one of the many events we will be hosting throughout this year.

At CEDA, we believe that strong communities are built from the ground up - and our interns are a vital part of that foundation.

The CEDA Internship program isn't about fetching coffee; it's a hands on deep dive into rural economic development, our interns gain real world experience that leaves a lasting impact on the communities they work with.

We are incredibly proud to cultivate the next generation of economic development leaders; equipping them with the tools, mentorship, and regional insights needed to drive meaningful local change.

We are thankful for our current cohort and their hard work, fresh perspectives and dedication; this week we highlight Anna Rosium doing some work in Pelican Rapids. Great job Anna and we are happy to have you as part of the CEDA team!

Through RCP, CEDA staff helped launch the Vergas Business Rehabilitation Program by providing support for grant research and writing, completing a First Impression Report, and sharing community resources to guide local economic development. By leveraging RCP funding, the project secured a $25,000 Otter Tail County Community Growth Partnership Grant and $10,000 in local contributions, creating a $50,000 Commercial Rehabilitation Program to revitalize businesses, attract customers, and enhance the community’s overall appeal.

Economic Development isn't just about the buildings getting built or the businesses being created; its also about the life that happens in between.

Community placemaking is the art of creating spaces where people actually want to hang out. When this happens local economies thrive.

Recently, CEDA's Mitch Massman worked many others from the Pine Island Community; including Pine Island's Lion's Club, Cheese Fest, Chamber of Commerce, EDA Board, Library Board, Park Board, Prairie Island Indian Community, Community Foundation, Public Works and City Council; to find funding and create this beautiful mural in Pine Island.

Through RCP, Rushmore created a new revolving loan fund to help local businesses upgrade and modernize. Staff also completed a First Impression Report, compiled community resources, and assisted in launching an in-depth community survey to identify key priorities and opportunities for growth. As a result, Rushmore now has a clearer understanding of its needs and a strategic tool to support business retention and expansion. The revolving loan fund equips local businesses with resources to enhance operations, improve customer experiences, and remain competitive.

Be Your Own Boss Camp is a fun, week-long summer program for students who are entering 5th or 6th grade. Held annually at the NICC Cresco Center, the camp introduces young entrepreneurs to the basics of business, marketing, and STEM through hands-on activities, field trips, and guest speakers.

Throughout the week, participants worked with local business professionals to develop a business idea, create marketing materials, and build a business plan. The camp concludes with a Shark Tank-style presentation where students pitch their ideas to a panel.
By the end of camp, students will gain confidence, creativity, and practical skills that can help them launch their own small ventures, such as babysitting, lawn care, or pet-sitting services. Local businesses and sponsors, along with the coordinating efforts by Howard County Business and Tourism and the Cresco Area Chamber of Commerce (CEDA staff), are generous with their support each year and the camp would not be possible without it!
